FOXNews.com - Obama Under Fire for Backing Deal to Lift Global Ban on Commercial Whaling

Quote:
The Obama administration is leading an effort within the International Whaling Commission to lift a 24-year international ban on commercial whaling for Japan, Norway and Iceland, the remaining three countries in the 88-member commission that still hunt whales.
Ahhhh...he's finally found an area where he can lead.

This is truly amazing.

Quote:
The administration argues that the new deal will save thousands of whales over the next decade by stopping the three countries from illegally exploiting loopholes in the moratorium.
Huh? What loopholes.

Quote:
But environmentalists aren't buying it.
I would imagine not.

Another campaign promise, down the crapper;

So by "strengthening the global ban on whaling", obama will push to do away with the ban.

Gosh, doesn't that make so much sense?

You're not pleased? I would think that would make conservatives happy, all of you who don't believe governments have a right to get involved in any money making venture. Less regulation is the rally call of your party, isn't it?

Here's some more info on this issue. I am confident Obama is not going to support lifting the ban if it increases whale hunting. Iceland, Japan and Norway ignore the present whaling ban as it now stands finding exemptions that allow them to hunt. I need to have more details before I start condemning Obama.
Clip:
"If the proposal remains unchanged, the United States will vote against it," said Monica Medina, the Obama administration's delegate to the IWC, told a congressional subcommittee last week.
What the United States has done is agree to listen to the whaling plan, where in the past the U.S. had joined the fiercest anti-whaling countries like New Zealand, South Africa and Australia in refusing to even discuss Japan's proposals.

Disgraceful if Obama backs this deal to lift the ban. We need stricter anti-whaling policies globally. Japan et al get away with going around the ban by saying they only hunt whales for 'research' purposes. Bunch of BS.

You know if Obama wanted to help save whales he could stop American whaling. My guess is since only Indian tribes are allowed to do it he would have a ton of historical precedence for the president acting unilaterally on the matter too.

Try and stay on topic.

This is about the despicable killing of whales, which obama seems to be FOR.

What do you think of that?

This may be just semantics, but how do you illegally exploit a loophole in the law? If there is a loophole, would that not mean that you are legally exploiting that loophole.

I have no problem with the Eskimos/ Inuits and other native tribes hunting whales for their livelihood.

Commercial whaling should be banned completely.
