I would buy a low mileage collection of cool cars for the 850K asking price of this hybrid . . .
Then you're not the target market for this car. The target market is someone who probably already has a number of the cars you say you'd buy with the money instead, or could buy all of them and the 918 without having to make any significant lifestyle sacrifices to do it.

I get that, but my rule with exotic cars usually starts with: "Who is going to fix it, who would buy it/take it on trade when I want to get rid of it?" Uber exotics can be trouble in both of those areas.
So regardless of how much money I have, I still would be aggravated if I had a 850K car that won't start and nobody around to fix it! Nothing against Porsches (I happen to love them) but cars like the 918, the Bugatti Veyron and Lamborghini Aventour (spelling?) would never be on my bucket list due to the potential hassle of ownership.
A decent amount of these cars will be parked next to the one another for years and years only to resurface and bring in huge $$$$$ as a pair! (Well they better, pair is over million now)

When people talk about cars as investments, the 918 is what they are talking about. For all its potential, the typical 918 will spend most of its life sitting under glass. It's more a car to be admired from outside the cockpit and shown off than used.
Meanwhile, your workaday 911s and Caymans will be doing track duty, weekend excursions, daily commuting... The kind of driving that an owner can enjoy.
