My husband and I are looking at purchasing a home in the western suburbs (Beaverton and Hillsboro), but the traffic and commute is becoming a big factor in deciding where we should put down our roots.

My husband works in the northwest industrial district and I work in Sherwood. We are looking at a home on Scholls Ferry near Progress Ridge in Beaverton/Tigard. We are also looking at homes in the Tanasbourne area and some directly behind the Nike campus.

Does anyone have experience with any of those commutes?

NW industrial to 185th
NW industrial to Nike
185th to Sherwood
Nike to Sherwood

Which would be less of a nightmare?

Thanks!

All of the above. The first two are about the same. 185th to Murray is usually a pretty easy commute, it's when you get to the 217 interchange that you start having issues all the way past the tunnels.

The other two depend on where near Nike or 185th you're looking at. From Nike you'd pass down Murray to get over to Roy Rogers' Road, from 185th you'd cross over to 175th then hit Roy Roger's Road again. But if you're at the North end of either road, traffic can get pretty bad and add 15-30 minutes easily.

From Tanasbourne, you can take Cornell most of the way in and avoid HWY 26 traffic. There are also alternatives in Germantown Road and Skyline. Just note that those roads go over the hills, as opposed to through (as hwy 26 does) so you tend to run into snow or ice more often during the winter.

I have a family member who works in the Montgomery Park area, and she drives Cornell most of the way.

And I used to take Cornell Road from NW Portland to NIKE when I worked there. 30 minutes door to door max. The pinch point is the 4-way stop at Lovejoy and 25th.

Thanks, guys! That actually helps a lot. It seems like the commute would be doable for both of us. When I wrote this I meant to add Scholls Ferry to the mix. Does anyone know if Scholls to downtown is worse than Nike to downtown?
