HELP!

The 9% income tax is not taken out of my paycheck I earn in WA. So for all of you who work in WA but live in OR, do you take the money aside to pay later to the state of Oregon?

How does one figure out how much they owe Oregon? Don't the tax brackets change with income?

Just need some advice on what to do. Thanks to everyone who can respond! I really appreciate it.

Well, I would caution on the side of error. More then likely Uncle Sam and his nephew State of Or will want their cut. Can you ask your employer to deduct proper tax for state of OR, should be easy if you go through a secondary payroll company?

Basically (from what I remember) if you live in OR you are held responsible for your WA income as a resident of OR with OR law. I live in Japan, and Uncle Sam wanted his cut of my last years income too....you are taxed on residence.

Good Luck

If you live in Oregon, you pay Oregon income tax, regardless of where you work (there are some exceptions, but they are very specific and deal with certain lines of work). If you live in Portland and work in Vancouver at a regular job, you'll still pay the income tax. If your employer doesn't withhold it for you, you'll end up paying it to the state yourself.

Washington doesn't have an income tax, so no. There are a lot of other border areas in which both states have an income tax, and there it's possible that you have to pay both.

You DO have to pay Oregon income tax even if you live in Washington. I did this for a while and ended up moving to Oregon because it was such a pain. If your employer will not deduct those taxes for you, then you need to do them yourself. If you can afford it, then I would hire an accountent to figure out those numbers for you. They can be expensive so you may want to figure it out yourself and set aside around 20% of your income. I know that's a lot, but there is nothing worse than not having enough money to pay your taxes when April comes around!!

Thanks everyone. I'm going to ask my employer to do that so I don't have to mess with this later.

You will pay Oregon income tax for the profits earned in Oregon. Basically, yes for your portion of your mother's trust.
