So I'll be moving to Portland next week and I was hoping for suggestions on places to live in the downtown area. I'm single and won't know a person there, so it'd be nice to live an area where there's a lot to do and easy to meet new people. My budget allows me a place around $1,500, give or take. Just from research online, I plan on looking at Asa Flats and Indigo12West. Any other suggestions or comments on those two places? Thanks!!

Rents are slightly less around PSU than they are in the Pearl District.

Both buildings are new, you could look on apartment ratings dot com to see what others have said. One or two negative comments may be the tennant, a number of them may indicate a landlord issue.

Keep in mind that parking may be in addition to your rent. The City does issue resident parking permits that cost about $45/yr for several areas near downtown. Area Parking Permit Program (APPP) | The City of Portland, Oregon Map: http://www.portlandoregon.gov/transp...article/327083

Welcome home!

Yeah, most places charge between $100-$150 for parking but I like the idea of my car being in a secure parking garage. Is the Pearl the best area to live in for the bar/restaraunt scene? I don't mind spending a little extra to be in the middle of it all. Thanks again for the suggestions so far!

Yes the Pearl is good but I like NW for the bar and restaurant scene a bit better. It may be a bit less expensive and I think a bit more interesting. They are all so close together, you can check out all of downtown, the Pearl and NW within an hour or less.

The NW Portland neighborhood Minervah is referencing is directly west of the Pearl District essentially between Thurman and Burnside Streets and NW 26th (more or less). Some have called that the 'Alphabet District' because the streets are named in alphabetical order. Your challenge in that area will be finding a rental with secure parking. Some of the rentals have a garage that was built in the 1920s, works for a compact car. New buildings may not be any better. You really need to actually try any parking spot you would be renting. My parents rented a lovely apartment on SW Park at Clay a few years ago, the parking spot was so narrow the passenger needed to exit to leave enough space for the driver to get out. Parking was very difficult.

My bad! Nell is 100% correct. As a non-driver I tend to forget about those things. It's something about which to be concerned wherever one moves. It just goes to show, everyone will give opinions from a differing point of view so it's good to remember that one has to take into consideration all aspects of advice.

Worse comes to worst, in that area, you could rent a spot in a parking garage that's open 24-hours that's not associated with your building. It may be a slight walk but shouldn't be too far.

You can also park far enough into the NW, like Raleigh and 15th that street parking is free. When I worked in the Pearl, I'd do that all the time. Then just walk the remaining 10 or so blocks into work.
