The tree has since been returned according to KGW tonight. But since another has already been planted in its place they are going to plant it someplace else if it can be saved according to the news story.

There are some pretty funny comments. Sometimes a humorous story is a nice break from all the serious ones we see.

Cute story. There are many worse things that Portland could make national news for!

yeah truly, in 30 or 40 years that tiny little planter will be all broken by the tree's trunk growing too wide for it. i mean it looked about a foot wide? and what about the roots?

It's replaced frequently, as was indicated in the article. There wouldn't really be any tree that could permanently be planted there.

And it wouldn't take a Doug Fir 30 or 40 years to bust out of a small planter.

If you're careful you could actually plant pretty much any tree and keep it in there for years. It just takes special soil and a lot of careful pruning. Replanting is easier though.
