I live in a small town a few hours from the Portland metro area. I am planning a trip to the Portland area, and I would like to pickup some asian groceries, but since I am new to the area, I have no idea which stores are better/bigger.

Does anyone have recommendations on which asian groceries store to lookup in the Portland area (I'm casting a wide net, so include the suburb towns like Vancouver, Hillsboro, Beaverton)? Preferably one of the larger ones that carry a variety of products.

I'm looking for indian and south-east asian groceries, which are not the same as the chinese/japanese/korean groceries that tend to dominate most asian grocery stores. So if there are stores that carry those products that will be great.

Thanks.

I usually go to H-Mart in Tigard, but I think this might be more of what you are looking for. It's in Beaverton:

Apna Bazaar - Home

If you're looking for SE Asian stuff go to SE 82nd in Portland and go to Hong Phat or Fubonn(I like Hong Phat better)--which are Vietnamese/Chinese run places that serve a lot of the Vietnamese and Chinese communities and Thai restaurateurs(also have Fillipino stuff and a smaller Indonesian isle). If you're looking for Indian stores go to NW Cornell in Hillsboro and go to Apna Bazaar or India Supermarket(I like Apna).

There's also a smaller place on SE 122nd in Portland called Maung Mingala International Mart that is Burmese but has a lot of Indian and SE Asian stuff plus halal meat--which isn't as big as the other's but still interesting.

The most fun Asian market is Uwajimaya in Beaverton, but that's mostly Japanese.

I love Uwajimaya and the bookstore there is so cool. My kids can spend over an hour shopping for everything from produce to Japanese anime to Beard Papa's puffs! It's an easy drive from downtown Portland.

There is a decent Asian Market in Beaverton, and it's called Asian Market or Asian Food Center (I'm thinking Food Center) between Canyon & 117th, near TJ MAXX, and it's bigger than it appears from before going in. And it's a stone's throw from the MAX station - very convenient unless you're going for several bags of groceries.

Yeah, Uwajimaya is pretty great. They have the best seafood selection anywhere too.

How are the prices at Asian Food Center compared to Uwajimaya?

Well, I admittedly can't really answer that, because I've gone in there a few times only to pick up snacks (which I've never done at Uwajimaya). Meats look very fresh, and the produce center is ample. I can't really answer your question but I do recommend checking them out since it's so close to MAX.

I've learned a little bit inside that store. In the frozen meat bins I observed how little is 'wasted' from meat. In the pork section I looked at everything from the common parts to unusual offerings like packaged snouts, and ears, hearts... Surprised to not see cheeks, though - that's common in Louisiana.

FWIW, you can order from Uwajimaya with the Amazon Prime Now app for home delivery within a couple hours. Doesn't help the OP but in case anyone else might find it useful.
