I got a new job in North Portland, near U of P, and am wondering how long the morning commute will take from SW Portland if I take I5. I know traffic is horrible southbound in the mornings but any idea about going north? What about in the evenings going back south at around 5pm?

Would it be wise to take the bus or stick to driving?

This is the kind of question you could answer for yourself in seconds on your GPS or, if you do not have one, by using the mapping site of your choice online. I find either way to be spot on the money everytime.

Where in SW more specifically?

Most of the snags will be in-bound rather than out-bound. If you were in Goose Hollow you'd have the option of bypassing I-5/405 entirely and going by Greeley or perhaps 30 out to the St. John's Bridge depending on which side of UofP you were heading to.

Though I suspect you're talking about the SW suburbs, in which case you'll have the same traffic all the way in, but the option of taking either 405 or 5 depending on which one is flowing better on any particular day.
