Any numbers for the cost of propane per gallon would be appreciated.

I believe someone mentioned $3.00 a gallon. Propane costs have skyrocketed in the past few years. Propane USE to be the better choice for heating but now electricity is beating out propane costs for heating.

At 6,000 feet you will be utilizing a lot more propane due to the cold. Add a poorly built home with leaky walls and windows, poor insulation, you will be paying dearly in the winter.

On the other hand, during summer you can get by without A/C because it will be cooler during the day and the temps will drop at night.

It might be a wash in the end by saving money in the summer but having to spend more money in the winter to heat.

It's always a secret. There doesn't seem to be any reporting sources as there are for gasoline. Some community newspapers report propane prices like the Courier does for gasoline. You have to call each provider. I last paid 2.95 per gallon to fill some small tanks, but we are still heating the house from the tank that was filled a while back. Generally, for a house, it is best to have a big tank and fill it in summer when the prices are down.

As for whether or not electric heat is more economical, use the site I posted to compare. You need to know the efficiency of your furnace and the real price of electricity.
The real price is really hard to determine, but I simply divide my dollar amount by the kwh used for every month. It always comes up way higher than their rate charge because of the Byzantine accounting system they have. It also depends on your metering plan. All but the standard plan charge you more from noon to 7 PM and less otherwise. There is also a plan that takes into account the load you use at any given time.

On some of the plans, using an electric space heater would appear to be an economical way to heat a single room at the published rate during off-peak periods. But the published rate is not what you end up paying.

I think the current price is closer to $2.35 per gallon. Google "propane, Prescott, AZ" and call a company.

Propane prices fluctuate a lot more than natural gas prices. Prices are not as volatile as gasoline, but they definitely rise and fall.

And if you do not take the full tank, in other words get short fills you will pay more too, at least I did in SE AZ with my property.
I used to wait until my tank was close to 80% and then I would call and check the price before I filled up.
I never allowed to company to come in top off when they wanted to.
I have owned many types of property and I prefer gas heat, natural or propane and for cooking and water heating.
