To me, Monday Night Football meant Don Meredith, Howard Cosell, and Frank Gifford. The broadcasters that have come and gone since that team was no longer, have always seemed anticlimactic, even after a quarter of a century.

They were a big reason I fell in love with the game growing up - Cosell's halftime highlights before there was any such thing, Gifford's straight talk and of course Meredith's perfect dose of the fan's perspective made it bigger than life.
A genuinely nice guy, very unpretentious, even with Cosell goading him in the booth..
I recall reading an article about him some time ago, explaining the reaons why he left the NFL , and broadcasting in the early 80s ( around age 45), and sought refuge in the quieter life in Santa Fe, NM. Apparently, on top of his salary with ABC, he had done quite well with investments, and owned property as well, but basically he just wanted to get away from the limelight, and live a simpler life.
I'm going to have to search around the Internet for more information on this; it's just very interesting to hear of someone who disdained the spotlight, and managed to do just that for about 30 years...
I remember seeing him a passenger terminal in Dallas when I was about 12 yrs old. I was surprised how old he looked compared to TV. It was one of my first brushes w/ a celebrity.
