IIRC.. Didn't he retire in the middle of a game?

Anyway.. Found dead in Florida today. 35 years old.. No word yet, but.. This has a very bad smell of suicide around it.

From The Athletic today:

Quote:
Vontae Davis, a 10-year NFL cornerback who made two Pro Bowls with the Indianapolis Colts, has died at the age of 35, Davie (Fla.) police said Monday.

Davis was found dead at his home in Southwest Ranches, Fla., police said in a statement. Officers responded to a call to the home by a house assistant, who found Davis dead, police said.

“Preliminary information suggests that foul play is not involved,” police said. An investigation is still active.

Davis last played for the Buffalo Bills in 2018. However, his time with the Bills was short. In his first start with the team, Davis retired at halftime of a Week 2 loss against the Los Angeles Chargers. He played just 29 defensive snaps.

“This isn’t how I pictured retiring from the NFL,” Davis said in a statement after the game. “But in my 10th NFL season, I have been doing what my body has been programmed to do: Get ready to play on game day. I’ve endured multiple surgeries and played through many different injuries throughout my career and, over the last few weeks, this was the latest physical challenge. But today on the field, reality hit me fast and hard: I shouldn’t be out there anymore.
IMO a player has to be hurting really bad to hang up his cleats during halftime. I suspect his injuries were a source of constant pain which probably led him to self-medicate, thus this could be an accidental overdose or a deliberate suicide to end the pain. No matter, it's just plain sad.

Vernon Davis says that his brother stepped out of a sauna and collapsed.

So.. That wouldn't indicate suicide.

He mentioned he had ADD.. If he were taking adderall or similar.. And, it's not unusual for athletes to have enlarged hearts.. Adderall basically being a legal version of meth.. Might just be a massive heart attack.

Thanks for the update. Like Matthew Perry, drugs and hot water/saunas can have bad results.
