I never said that he didn't have a personality predisposed to being a manager. One of the traits of a good manager is being willing to do whatever it is you're delegating, if that's what it takes to get the job done.

Of course he's intelligent as well. But my point is that he would not be where he is today if he hadn't been consistently working above and beyond the call of duty, every day, day in and day out, for thirty years.

That was my point, if you don't have managerial personality (with a minor in self-advancement, taking all the credits and avoiding all the responsibility) working long hours, doing dirty jobs, picking up the slack, going above and beyond, yada, yada, yada is futile (or stupid, depending on how harmful your job is). At the end of a day big bosses need somebody who could boss around lower forms of life on an oil patch. If you don't have what it takes to do just that, keep putting in those long hours, invisible market forces will reward you with a good sized hemorrhoid, bitterness and taste of crap in your mouth.
I agree with "luck" and also "who you know" and, of course, people that are better formed tend to do better. Hard work has very little to do with since the supply of workers is much greater than the demand and many employers just prefer people who will go with the flow and keep their mouth shut.
Those who think that "luck", etc. is a key to success are probably NOT what we would call successful. Obviously, "success" has several interpretations. Happy family, good kids, nice lifestyle, etc. So, success is probably best thought of as achieving your goals in life.
Very, very few good things in life come along without planning, simple hard work and extremely important: paying your dues. Keeping your eye focused on the goal, and not giving up. Doing what it takes to get there.
Education is also key, as that is our foundation of living in a civilized manner. I believe that education is not necessarily critical to achieving high income, but it is critical to us becoming well rounded, whole persons. Frankly, simply making money isn't a big mystery. Living well is a mystery for many people it seems. Having a big picture view of life is important to living well.
There are tens of thousands of occupations, job titles and professions out there. The number of occupations where "drive, focus, ambition and persistence" lead to any measure of the financial success (or simple comfort) is much smaller. Success boils down to managing others and appropriating fruits of labor of others. If you cannot apply "drive, focus, ambition, persistence" in the ways facilitating you managing others and collecting disproportionate share of the collective output, 99.9% you will never experience true success never mind "drive, focus, ambition and persistence".
People strive to be successful so they could have power over my (and your) life in the multitude of ways, direct and indirect. There is no double guessing about that. That's why watching peons celebrating success is so amusing. Considering what a success inevitably becomes in this world - claim on your life - only truly peculiar society can celebrate that.

Those who chalk the success of others up to "good luck" generally have a victim mentality - that's been my personal observation anyway. They have every excuse in the world as to why they couldn't "make it" when often they simply weren't willing or able to do what it takes to actually be successful - and by successful, I mean that not just in the monetary sense.
And it's a slap in the face to those who have truly worked very hard, and made sacrifices, and good decisions that weren't the most comfortable at the time, and who planned and educated themselves, etc etc, for all their efforts to be dismissed as "luck" or "selling out to da man" or whatever.
