...never ask them to do something constructive?

Why don't they command someone to pick up trash from the side of the road or visit with a lonely elderly person?

The recent Navy Yard shooting is just another example of the ill nature that often is revealed whenever the voices inside someone's head is cited.

Is it the inherrent evil that lurks within?

That sounds like a potential Saturday Night Live sketch, actually.

For the same reason that people who are reincarnated were always, in a previous life, members of the court of British Royalty.

I hadn't thought about it, but you are right. The voices don't work for good.

Or maybe they do. The voices that have their puppets picking up trash and working in soup kitchens don't make the 6 o'clock news, so maybe they are doing that and we just don't hear about them.

Who knows. Maybe Mother Teresa was just obeying the voices in her head.

Have you heard the voices in other peoples' heads? How do you know that they don't give out constructive commands every now and then? This assumption of yours is a very common psychological phenomena in humans where we draw false conclusions based on evidence that confirms our belief while ignoring the evidence that goes against it.

I'm sure the voices that people suffering psychosis hear often give mundane suggestions, but what interest would that be to us? The only thing that interests us are the destructive commands, so that's all we hear about.

If you're genuinely interested in "inner voices" read Julain Jaynes. This Wiki article outlines the thesis of his very readable and fascinating book, "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind"..

Hahaha, that is so true. Or they were Mary Magdalene, or a great warrior. Never some insignificant person who lived an obscure life in poverty and died of tuberculosis at the age of 19.

How do you know they don't? When the voices tell them to kill, it's newsworthy so we hear about it; if voices told someone to clean up litter or visit an elderly person, how would we ever know about it?

In truth though, I think having voices in your head would fill a person with terror, regardless of what they were saying. When people are in a state of profound fear, it is natural that subsequent acts would reflect that fear. Most people in a state of fear don't perform loving actions.

Exactly. And to the OP, there's nothing funny about schizophrenia. It's one of the most severe mental illnesses that exists.
