It's a concentration assessment, and it's a small facet of a mental status check. The way you respond to the task is as telling (more, actually) than your facility of completion of the task. Nobody really cares how accurately you subtract in your head. More informative is your reaction to any issues you have with maintaining the degree of concentration necessary, to listing your place, to being asked to perform such a task on cue, etc.
I understand this is an old thread, just general information for those browsing lately.
Because I am indignant toward people who tell me what they think is best for me health-wise when they've obviously got their own huge health issues they can't even deal with.
How do you know a person is obese from eating cookies ( per your OP) or from a hormonal condition? Maybe you shouldn't be so judgemental, & then you might find it easier to function.
I think if I concentrated, I could count backwards in 7s, but I would have to try hard.
I realize that, now. I hate old threads, I wish they were color coded, I always forget to look at the dates, or only remember when I see todays dates by other posters.
Am I missing something here? You mean starting with 100, then 93, 86, 79, etc?
I don't think you're missing anything. It does require some level of concentration to keep the result of one operation in mind as you perform the next operation. It seems to assume that the arithmetic portion of this assessment will not be a challenge. Not sure that's a safe assumption.

OK. I once backed my car into someone else's after I left a bar and found myself in front of a cop reciting the alphabet backwards, and I nailed it.
I could do it, but then I minored in math in college, and I do simple arithmetic calculations mentally every day - I have to keep a physical record of the exact amount of hours I'm clocked in at work because otherwise, I estimate it wrong and my supervisor has to fix it.
Actually, it's simple subtraction that any 4th grader should be able to do. That's why it's a good exam; anyone with basic elementary school math skills should be able to do it. Serial 7's, as it's called, is a standard test of concentration as part of a mental status exam.
I have an engineering degree, I just needed to take one more math class and I would have got a minor in math

I calculated the circumference of the Earth in my head using trigonometry and I was less than 10% off
To me, it’s a dumb test,
All I do is break up 7 into 6+1, 5+2, 4+3 and get my answer
93 - 7 = 90 - 4 = 86
I got from 100 to 2 in exactly 30 seconds
I recently took a long mental test (as part of a research study) and that was one of the preliminary questions. Along with "name as many animals as you can (timed)" and "name as many words that start with L (also timed)" - I choked on the latter one, very embarrassing.
Then the actual test, part of it was repeating sequences of numbers, starting with 2 and going up to 10 numbers. I thought I did pretty well on that . Then the same thing, but now you had to repeat them in reverse order. OMG, it was worse than being back in high school. At least I made $50. Going back next week for a followup test.
I have an older friend who told me she failed the "draw a clock" test. I'm worried about her.
