Or anyone who likes to watch movies about families struggling in the ghetto?

Probably the same reasons as movies about poor whites, like the Grapes of Wrath, Joe Dirt, Gummo, 8 Mile, and Poor White Trash!

Because it relates to people who are currently struggling or use to.

I posted before I saw your posting history. You are quite obsessed about this film.

People want to learn about people who are different than they are within the safe world of the living room or movie theater.

Poverty porn?? What on earth? Precious, The Pursuit of Happyness, The Color Purple, etc, etc are all stories of strong people overcoming hardship, maintaining their will to live and succeed despite horrible circumstances and repeated knock-downs. That has probably been the basis of more movies historically than any other genre except love stories. Just because they are black and live in the ghetto their stories of living through and overcoming adversity must be not only separated from all the others, but demeaned with the title "poverty porn"?

People watch these movies for the same reasons we watched Rocky, people love to root for underdogs and see people triumph over adversity. I think you need help if you see it as wallowing in their misery rather than rooting for them to succeed, and I feel bad for you because you must live an emotionally bereft life for this view to even occur to you.

Perhaps it's no coincidence that the OP also seems to be very concerned with economics and investing?!

"A man who is unconscious of himself acts in a blind, instinctive way and is in addition fooled by all the illusions that arise when he sees everything that he is not conscious of in himself, coming to meet him from outside as projections upon his neighbour." – Carl Jung
