Not that uncommon of a topic, but definitely one that does need to be addressed more throughly.

I mean there is a reason sometimes people get obsessed with trying to compare themselves to various characters, and particularly more from kids' cartoons.

Specific examples would help progress your theory.

I believe it would indicate something 'not quite right' for an adult to be obsessed with a cartoon character.

This "needs" to be addressed?

Children will "try on" different personalities, temporarily, in their normal experimental way but once they're getting to later childhood they just don't do that anymore, usually.

An adult who takes on the personality of a TV character may not have a developed sense of self (to put it mildly).

Yeah there we go, was talking more in the case of children.

Well...maybe change the thread title? Are you talking child psychology?

Very tiny children can actually pretend to "be" someone or something else, sure. And that will be influenced by anyone around them, whether actual right-there people or characters they see, hear or read about. That's normal. But that's not how your OP was stated so I'm confused.

If the question is now: are very young children influenced by others' personalities? Yes, of course. They're forming their own personalities are and are getting those ideas somewhere. Can that include being influenced by TV characters? Yes, of course, under a certain age. I believe there is an age cutoff before which a child literally can not distinguish fantasy from reality. At that age she will literally think that, for example, SpongeBob is a real person/personality who has feelings, exists beyond the show on the TV and so on.

My son is going on 15 and is intellectually delayed. He literally does think SpongeBob and other characters are real and he cries if he thinks they're "hurt." However, he is intellectually functioning at a max of kindergarten (depending upon the test and what was focused on, we've had different psych assessments of this) and preschool for emotional functioning and reason. OTOH, he is past wanting to "be" Spongebob so I believe a child wold have to be very, very young to literally mold his/her personality directly after a TV character. JMO.

Interesting that I immediately read this differently. I have noticed when a popular show is out and the actor says something a different way than we have been used to hearing it and the next thing you know lots of people are talking that way.

The red haired guy on CSI for example. Before him someone would ask "are you going to the store?" and an answer might be yes or no. After that so many people would answer "I am".

Boston Legal had "Omar" from the wire. On the wire he said INDEED a lot. After the episode he was on Spader said indeed a lot.

So I feel that people are influenced by the characters.
