Coming down to Placida for a couple of months and was going to throw the pole in for some relaxing fishing off of the dock in the saltwater canal. Just checked the fishing license fees for non-res. Fifty bucks for a salt license and that doesn't include snook permit etc. Don't know if I wanna spend that for two months of gettin' some line wet. oh well, it was a thought - apparently just not a good one. And yes I know about the 3 and 7 day licenses but with my luck it'd monsoon every day.

I believe snook season endS May 1 so there's no reason to get a permit.

When you think about how much you'll spend for one dinner out versus the hours of fishing enjoyment it's a no-brainer.

Well now Gary... when ya put it into that perspective, I s'pose ya have a real good point! Re-think is in order....

While I've got your attn then, what pound test would be recommended for the canals? I don't think throwing the lightweight rig into the car would be worthwhile.

I always use a lightweight 6 ft spinning outfit with FireWire and a florocarbon leader.

It makes all the fish seem big.

12 lb test works fine. You aren't fishing for shark, giant grouper. You will find bass, etc in the fresh water canals. Brackish canals, small snook, bass, etc.

Work plastic worms, shrimp, plastic frogs coupled with surface baits.

what pound test on the FW? Maybe I'll through the lightweight in anyhow then. I just "assumed" the fish in the canals would be larger and I'd need a heavier setup to keep 'em out of the mangrove roots.
This property is lined with mangroves on the canal, 'cept for the dock area of course but that's just a spur off of the main canal into his boat lift. (which there's no boat... )

I use 20 pound FireWire it's so thin but yet plenty strong enough for anything you might catch.

Thanks! Yeah I could see where that could be a major rush. "large" fish on light tackle.

A longer rod works well from shore/pier. You do need extra muscle to get them in without fish getting into mangroves, pilings, etc.. Heavier leader is also worthwhile. I use 30 and it can get roughed up pretty quickly.

We bought a annual license (good for 365 days starting day bought (not Jan 1-Dec 31). Worth it! Great fishing everywhere you go.

...+ you can fish the beaches... Make sure you bring a medium sized Zara Spook (bone color works good). Great topwater action early and late in the day. Push the barbs down so you can quickly release the snook and jacks and trout (well, may want to keep a trout or two).

Rapala X rap XR8 and XR10 work really well too. Had some 40+ fish days on these. Glass Ghost color is a fish favorite...
