My husband and I have officially changed our address and we're in the process of moving into our Deep Creek home (we're mainly waiting for the kitchen renovations to finish up before bringing everything down here).

I'm a real newsie and I'm already missing my Washington Post. I know I can get an online subscription, and I might, but I want to read local news. What newspaper(s) are popular down here? Thanks.

The local newspaper would be the Port Charlotte Sun. It will give you what is going on in your area. It also includes USA today which gives the world news.

The Sarasota Herald Tribune has more news and happenings in Sarasota and the surrounding areas.

All the news you need is right here on our little City Data pages. You get the economic news of openings and closing a of local businesses, of course the real estate happenings, sports news led off by the fishing forum with a side of where we watch our NFL teams, the crime beat is covered (just look how we informed everyone about our first bank robbery in years), of course the only political news we have an appetite for is discussing our water, sewer and trash boards and that's the way we like it. I can't forget about our Op/Ed pages. Nearly every post has an opinion and editorial posting...yes, friends...we are live and local most days right here. Now, look at your fingers. No ink. That's the news. Have a great day.

Thanks for the recommendation. However, USA Today is okay for when I'm traveling but it's much like broadcast news...it pretty much gives only the headlines. I like a paper that provide in-depth coverage on issues.

For a long time I used to get both the Washington Post and the Evening Sun ((every day)). They were both great papers at the time!! Both have made significant cuts over the years, and now there are much better news sources in line, except that you have to hunt and peck for it and expect that much of it is now "framed" and biased toward one view point or another.

I have always liked a News Paper.. like the feel of it and the sound's it made ....I find it sad to say they are all dying or have died .. The Post is now like the Hollow Chocolate Easter Bunny.. Just a shell of what it used to be.. The days of them winning multiple Pulitzers in a single year are long gone.. The Washington Post has won 47 Pulitzer Prizes. This includes six separate Pulitzers awarded in 2008, the second-highest number ever given to a single newspaper in one year.
We too took the Charlotte Sun, we took it for 2 years.. I watched it digress in those 2 years.. But I may go back, in spite of it being about 3/4's fish wrap..

Ever since the advent of instant, 24-hour on-line news I've given up on the newspapers for news. Now I choose my paper by who has the best comics.

When I was a kid, we lived in Baltimore but my dad worked in DC so he'd bring The Post home just so I could read the comics. Back then, they filled 3 pages. Today, they're down to 2 pages (but they're smaller so more are squeezed onto each page). Since I no longer get a paper, I get my comics fix by going to GoComics.com.
