My child started school last year and has Track 2. I am going to do everything I can to get him out of it. It is so choppy, there is no consistency. Nov. and Dec. were a joke. Just when he starts getting comfortable with something, bam, they are out of school again. I am fortunate to be home and work with him over track outs and maybe this won't be the case as he gets older but this track does not work well for us at all.

I would venture to say there are no "Anti Year Round" parents. There are PLENTY of "ANTI MANDATORY-Year-Round Parents" -- there is a HUGE difference between parental choice, and bureaucratic dogma. THAT is what makes parents hot under the collar.

We have had experience w/both YR and traditional. We prefer YR. My son is in 3rd grade and on track 3 and he has thrived in the YR program. I know most don't like track 3,but it's working for us and we have no complaints. Just when my son gets tired of school, he is slated to track out and just when he gets antsy about being home it's time for him to track in. The summers were awful for us when we were on the traditional calendar. As for vacations, we go when there's a track out. I love traveling during the off season. Lots of places have track out camps and since track 3 has a little bit of a summer (end of July-middle August), my son can do summer only camps, go to the pool, etc.

It's not as bad as people make it out to be.

I think the reason for people being against year round schools are:

A. All the transplants that have not had an opportunity of year round school concept.

B. Between schools calendars if you have children in both type, YR & traditional.

C. Continuous reassignment of children between WCPSS.

D. Don't want to learn the benefits of YR schools.

F. Fail to grasp the concept of pushing more children through the WCPSS available schools by utilizing the YR schedule!

What grade are you????

I prefer traditional, and we are in a traditional magnet school. Yay me. That means that my next two will be there too - no fuss, no muss.

We are currently in year round and love it. When my oldest goes to high school we will switch to track 4 for my younger 2 which has the closest schedule to traditional , including the whole month of July (we will schedule a family vacation then). The rest of the summer my high schooler will probably have a job for the summer(like I did), so we won't be able to travel much anyway. When my younger ones track out they will get alone time with me. I don't have a problem with it. My kids also love year round and they started out in traditional.
