Does anyone know how much it would cost to install a radon remediation system in a 1700 sq ft home (two floors)? Radon test came back at 3.1, which is too high in my opinion.
Thank you!

The "action level" is 4, I think your concern is justified. Be very careful in choosing someone. I used to be in this business and there are a lot of crooks out there. A radon remediation system is simply a vent. Depending on the build of your house, the cost will vary. If it goes beyond gravel, PVC, plastic, and a fan it's probably going too far. You might check with DHHS and see if they have any info to help you choose a contractor. Also don't forget your post installation testing!

Was that a short (24/48 hr) or long term test? Was the area sealed during the test? There are a long of factors that can affect the score.

NC DHHS has a nice web site on radon

48 hour test. Was done while sellers were still occupying home, so don't think the area was sealed.

We just had ours done....but ours is a walk-out basement so I don't know how that effects the cost, but it was around 1,700$

In New Jersey 12 years ago, it was around $2000. Exact same size house, though.

EPA says anything below 4.0 picos (average) is safe.

You have to understand that Radon comes and goes. Testing is done using the worst case sanerio, usually in home with no open windows, no ceiling fan going and limited open and closing of doors.

Also, if inspector used monitor, it would show if the monitor was moved or anything was out of the ordinary.

Since the average is 3.1, what was your highest? How often was it above 4.0?

I understand you feel you need remediation. If you live in Wakefield, there is more radon in that area than any other that I've had tested. The North Hills area has some too. It has to do with the granite rock in the ground.

So...in answer to your question...crawl space is the easiest...I'd say $500 to $700.

Basement and slab is more expensive since you have to drill into the concrete.
