If you're into old movies, the Ava Gardner museum in Smithfield is a good bet for you. More into outdoors stuff, and can handle the heat and humidity at this time of year, the zoo in Asheboro is just within a two-hour drive per Google, going south on U.S. 1/Capitol Blvd., getting onto I-440 West and then following it as it becomes U.S. 1/64, then going west on 64 to Asheboro.
For any 2 hour trip it really depends on where you are starting from. For a day trip you will probably want to start early so you will be in the morning traffic and that can add a lot of time if you have to go through Raleigh. For Wake Forest to Asheboro, I sure wouldn't want to try going down Capital to 440 in the morning. Haven't been there in a long time, but going 98 to 85 then 73 at Greensboro would seem to be the better route even though it is a few miles more.
I would also second Old Salem. I am in Wake Forest west of Capital and it takes me under two hours to get to Winston even leaving during morning rush hour(98 to 85/40).
Wilmington is also nice, but again you have to get through Raleigh in the morning.
If you like pottery...Seagrove is a fun place to spend the day visiting different potters. You will need to research it to find out how to get to the differnt potters.
Another place we like to go is Duplin Winey in Rose Hill right off 40. The tour and tasting and lunch take about 3 hours or so.
Edenton is a beautiful little town on the water and is right around 2 hours from Wake Forest (Google has as a little more than 2, but I think they overestimate).
