Finally!! I've only been waiting since 1988, but that's ok - the wait is over!! Check out Fat Joe's in Durham on Holloway Street for Chicago style Italian Beef sandwiches and Chicago hot dogs!
My boyfriend is SO excited about this! He works right up the road and is always raving about Chicago Italian beef! He goes to Chicago to visit family at least once a year and wishes he could find it around here. He's also happy that Polish places are popping up.
Thanks hula, you made his day! I'm excited to try it myself!
Ugh! So what are we left with? I had a Rosati's beef last week and it was awful They forgot the peppers, the bread was stale and the juice was so salty my blood pressure shot up 60 points Guess I'm gonna visit my kids in Chi-Town for some decent food.
It's super easy to make your own. I put a sirloin roast in a crock pot along with some au jus packets, water, and a (drained) tall jar of giardiniera (hot or mild, whatever your fancy is). Let it cook all day until the meat breaks apart very easily.
This has the same flavor as a Carm's Beef sandwich for those who know Carm's in Chicago.

Hopefully Fat Joe's will reopen. I had a chance to try their beef sandwiches & it was Really good!! The scent of au jus was on my hands for hours.... mmmm...!
