It seems likely that we will end up at Alston Ridge Elementary school. My son is in 4th grade (ad he will be in 4th grade when we move-- January) what will happen if he is behind in a subject? In particular, math? He gets good grades at his current school in NY but I have heard that many families have had an unpleasant surprise when they relocate. Do Wake County schools (in general) offer any remediation to help kids catch up? I would even do a private tutor in the evenings. This has just started worrying me and I am wondering if anyone has faced this challenge.

Depends on the school but ours has parents who volunteer as tutors. THey also have parent volunteers who come in and work with the kids during what's called "PIE time" (protected instruction and enrichment??? Not 100% sure of the acronym). But the parent gets a small group of kids and works with them on whatever the teacher says.

But - if he is really behind he will be sent for remediation. My DS was behind when we moved here and he was sent for resource with no IEP or anything. He also worked with a parent tutor. FYI all volunteers must pass a background check every year.

Again, offerings may depend upon the school.

One of the things to keep in mind here is that this area is heavy with people who are good at the math/science thing (hello, RTP) and therefore so are the kids. My kids are pretty average in math but that puts them behind here (we're from NY too).

I work at a Wake Co. school and the whole school groups all kids into math and reading groups by ability, but we are a Title 1 school, so there are extra teachers who work with the high and low kids. I think it depends on the school.

I would think by now - with a contract on a home, several weeks old, that you'd have definitely gone through the assignment process and know you'll be at Alston Ridge. Maybe I have missed soemthing in one of your posts.

Regardless, I would imagine that if you contacted the school, they would be able to either provide you with copies of the resources/materials being used, or steer you to a source online you could use.

I do know that this year WCPSS has implemented some 'standards" that make us much more like 30+ other states in the country.

We are still trying to get confirmation from WCPSS which school he will attend! I have spoken with neighbors and they all have students at Alston Ridge, but I am told a few kids in the subdivision do attend Mills Park. But I understand that Mills Park is ALREADY over capacity so it seems unlikely we will be directed there. I have been told by WCPSS that our address is not in their assignement databse yet... We have about 4 more months to sort this out.

I dont think the school will be able to give you the specifics until they get a chance to asses your son at the begining of the school year. From what you have written I am guessing that he might just need some catching up to do. Communicate with his teacher about your concerns right from the begining. She can tell you where he needs to focus after his asessments. If he needs a tutor you can ask his teacher to recommend someone. Usually there are teachers from the same school who offer their services after school or weekends. Good Luck and Welcome to WCPSS.

One other thing to consider is with the common core curriculum they should theoretically all be at the same place at the same time. Whether that actually happens remains to be seen.
