I remember the weatherman saying they were watching a little something off the coast of Wilmington, but it wouldn't amount to much. When we woke up the next morning, the first thing we heard was "17 inches of snow at the airport" and our thought was what airport? We were amazed to find out it was RDU!
We still laugh whenever we hear the weatherman say 'we're watching a little something off the coast'.
I was a kid in middle school at the time. It was best winter I ever had. It was surreal for someone who's never lived outside of the Triangle to start the previous day with 40 degree rain and hail, and then wake up with two feet of snow on the ground the next day, when I was expecting 4-6 inches at most.
A whole week of snow days from just that storm, on top of another week of snow days from the two smaller storms before it. Who wouldn't want to spend two less weeks of their life in middle school? They ran out of teacher workdays and had to start sending us on Saturdays, but those were only half-days and we really didn't do anything on them. It was an acceptable trade. We had a couple good winters after that one that I remember, but that will always be the best in my mind.
