Our children are very happy in their current school, but we are getting antsy in this small house, and would like to move. We want to stay in the general area (27613/27515/27617), but it would really limit our options to where we could live if we wanted to stay at the same school. Is it possible to move out of the school district and have your children continue to attend the school as long as you are willing to provide transportation?

Of course, we would need to think long and hard about the feasibility (and gas cost) of driving back and forth to school every day vs. taking the bus before we made any decisions, but just wanted to know if it was even allowed.

TIA!

When you say out of the district, do you mean moving out of Wake County and into another county? I can't imagine they would allow that.

If you are staying within Wake County, but leaving your school node, I have heard of them allowing your children to stay at that school as long as you provide transportation and fill out all the appropriate bureaucratic paperwork and have it approved.

No, I mean moving within the three zip codes I mentioned. Do you think it would be approved if the school was full and a high demand school?

I think you can stay at your school as long as you provide transportation. When you move up to the next school, though (ie, elementary to middle) I am not sure that transition is guaranteed. In fact I am pretty sure it's not.

You have to request a tranfer through the school's terminal grade. But it does depends on school and gradel level capacity, so there is no guarantee. I'd call WCPSS fort specifics to clarify their policy and speak with your school principal regarding any potential capacity issues.

If you have children in a given school already, then you are technically allowed to move wherever you care to within Wake County and still attend that school. So long as you provide transportation, as you note.

Have a child at the school, but one that's in preschool still? The young'un is not getting in the former base.

Have a rising 5th grader you'd like to go to MS with their friends? it better be in your base.

Of course, all of this is based on the CURRENT policy. No telling what they're going to do next year.

WCPSS: Student Assignment says:
Under the new Student Assignment plan, families with a change of address can remain at their current school if they provide their own transportation or can enroll in the base school for the family’s new address.

This thread is old. The policy has changed for 2016-2017 in Wake County. If you move, students can stay in their current school for the current year only if you provide transportation. After the current year, they have to attend one of the schools assigned for the new address.
