Yeah $1300/year is not much. We are around $4k/year and we don't really even drive much for the most part.

Tesla has power stations that are free to use for the life of the car but nothing nearby yet. Public and private stations are also available at city garages, museums, parks, etc. and will be more widespread each month from now on, so that's all free power right there.

A good friend has one, it is really a great car with amazing technology. Can't beat the instant torque either. If I had the money I would have one.

Unless I am missing something, there seems to be a VERY high chance of injury with kids in a that rear seat from a crash from behind.

Not according to NHTSA. It's been tested and receives a 5 star rating for rear impact. If you order that option from Tesla it's $2500 extra and the car's frame is doubly reinforced.

Reminds me of the station wagons in which I had to ride in the back of as the youngest child in my family - similar to the Steve Carell car in the movie "The Way Way Back."

After seeing the crash test results on Tesla, including the drop test, where the car essentially broke the test fixture, its probably the safest car on the road right now.

Those back seats were used on Volvos for years in addition to many other station wagons. If they were much more dangerous than other seating positions, I am sure they would have been banned by now.


Was this event at there service facility off Westgate by the Post Office facility?

A Tesla is probably the only electric car I would consider right now, but its a fair bit out of my comfort zone for what I would spend, even on a lease. I am also kind of waiting for an inductive charging capability where I can just pull into the garage and it charges automatically.

But, without these early cars, we won't get to the better ones.

Yes, off Westgate.

RE: rear crash, something like a paltry 2% of all crashes are rear impact, so you have to go off of not just how safe the car is (which is obviously the most important thing to consider overall) but also how likely you are to have a kid back there AND a rear impact at the same time. Most crashes are either frontal or side impacts and very very few are rear. I would still probably put my daughter in the center of the rear seat in a traditional car seat; for me, the jump seats in the back would be used for "overflow" seating when taking multiple families out on the town or shuttling multiple kids to and from events or school, for example. Not frequent usage by any means, thereby further reducing the statistical chances of anything bad happening.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a Tesla in our office building's parking lot. I'm trying to figure out if someone(s) in Raleigh own(s) one or if it was a test one. Does anybody know if anybody owns any in Raleigh? I was struck with how sleek it was in person which made me do a double-take. When I didn't recognize the car make/model brand, I looked closer & realized it was a Tesla.

Nice looking car.

Yea, like RDUBiker said, there are quite a few of them in Raleigh. A good friend owns one, and I see normally a few a week.
