Hi, Im currently living in Simi Valley, CA, moved from NJ. My family and I are hoping to relocate to NC. I would like a neighborhood that is safe, decent schools, middle class, and sorry, not too many NJ/NY transplants. We are conservative and family oriented. Not that I dislike NJ/NY, as that's where I was born, but Im not looking for a fast paced environment. We love traditional southern charm and values. Our price range would be under 300K. I have a job offer at Wake Med so I would like a 1/2 hour or less commute. Any ideas?

Thanks!

If you're looking to avoid NJ/NY transplants, you're moving to the wrong place.

Totally!
I had a similar path as you- went from Long Island to Thousand Oaks, CA to Cary (moved here in 1999).

We love it here and it's a great place to raise kids. I would never want to raise my kids in NY and as much as I love the Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village area, I would not have wanted to raise my kids there either.

Good Luck!

Try Cary. I think it's the most Simi Valley like area in the Triangle.

Yeah, what she says. I'm frankly surprised there is anybody left in those states anymore, 'cause it seems like they've all moved here.

I just moved from Palm Springs, CA to NC - we live in Holly Springs. Seems pretty conservative here, to me, and more locals than in Cary, which is a much bigger town. I'm renting a cute little 3-bedroom with a huge yard in a cutesy-cookie-cutter neighborhood that is for sale at $125,000. I'm within a mile of Target, Walmart, Walgreens, two grocery stores and a host of other stores, but my neighborhood is very country-ish and you wouldn't know the "city" is so close. Lots of fast food restaurants here, too - but I don't frequent those too much. The better eateries are in Cary (IMHO), which is about a 15-minute drive, and there are great malls in Cary, too (though not indoor malls like in Southern CA). I am about 20 miles from downtown Raleigh here. There is sizable traffic on the 40/440, but you can find ways through Cary to get you home or to work with a bit less stress.

Be forewarned there are many BIG differences between NC and CA - the political climate especially WHOA! Majorly conservative here - but it's pretty here and the sky is SO blue. Just know you have to get pest protection for the outside of wherever you live (compared with CA this is bug-central!).

I also hear that Fuquay Varina is also pretty laid-back and more small town-ish than Cary or Raleigh.

Good luck!

Well, you know... lots of people move up that way to seek their fortunes and stuff.

Before they move back here because traffic/taxes/better for kids/etc.

There's an indoor mall in Cary. Whether it's great at the moment is debatable. A Dave and Buster's just opened and that seems to make some people happy. I've yet to bother going to it.

But... in Raleigh, there's Crabtree (not far at all from Cary). And in Durham, there's Southpoint (again, not far from Cary). Triangle Town Center and Southpoint (in Raleigh and Durham, respectively) are a bit further from Cary.

NC/ Raleigh area native here, lived in Thousand Oaks for 8 years before moving to Hermosa. Simi Valley is slightly more blue collar than Cary. But Cary is the closest NC will get to Thousand Oaks. Having said that, the two places are still very different in almost every respect: geography, climate, culture, and amenities. Proximity to a large metropolis makes a huge difference too.

Maybe you could clarify some of the reasons for considering NC? What traditional Southern Charm and values actually are has been hotly debated on this forum before. But I would summarize it as simple politeness, not to be confused with friendship or generosity.
