Like most things in life, college is what you make of it. If you are looking for easy classes and a free lunch you can usually make it happen. If you are looking to better yourself and those around you, that can be accomplished also. I'm not sure why folks find it difficult to believe you can get by in life without doing much...we see examples of it all the time. Most of the anger folks have is really because of being jealous, most likely.

I could honestly care less if McCants got an easy ride at UNC. He would have gotten it somewhere else if not there. Lots of great things also happen at these universities also, we should focus on those opportunities. The athletic accomplishments of these sports only guys allows many other students ,who want an education, the ability to do so. All the triangle Universities do so much for the community and education, while still trying to maintain themselves as relevant sports powers at the same time. You will be hard pressed to find many public universities that can accomplish great things in both.

#7 Duke
#18 Notre Dame
#23 UVa
#23 Wake Forest
#30 UNC
#31 Boston College
#36 Georgia Tech
#47 Miami
#62 Clemson
#62 Syracuse
#62 Maryland
#62 Pittsburgh
#69 Virginia Tech
#91 Florida State
#101 NC State

How is this possible? Raleigh is experiencing so much growth, and the RTP is close by. NC State should be rising in the rankings, not falling. I'm not saying that these rankings are the most accurate measure of academics, but NC State should at least TRY to focus on the USNWR metrics. In my mind, this is a real scandal.

But in the end, NC State is always the victim. When they don't succeed in athletics or academics, it's always somebody else's fault. If not for the vast UNC conspiracy, NC State would be #1.
Soo a former player makes a statement against his school, so you go after another university? Chapel Hill fudged up. That is a fact. Their football results on the field matched what occurred off the field. No reason to bring this petty stuff that has zero association with the original topic.

I'm sure UConn would disagree with y'all over the "everyone does it" stuff, too. UNC never had an academic casualty in their revenue sports. Never. The players were kept on the court/field by cheating, illegal grade changes, etc., while other schools tried to do things the right way and lost players to bad grades. And in UConn's case, the team was not allowed to play in the NCAA tourney because of grades. Too bad they didn't have "The Carolina Way".
A pipeline of easy classes is not an NCAA violation. Fake classes, no syllabus, yes. Easy classes? Nope. Every college has them. Bee keeping at State. Stagecraft at Carolina. These classes aren't populated by athletes only.

To think Roy would ever give any player a directive about anything academic related is laughable. I'm quite sure ol' Roy has about 6+ layers of insulation for this exact reason. Of course he indirectly knows. Just like every other coach and AD in the country.

UNC has and should take their licks but this particular story is laughable. He implicated Dean Smith...that's not ridiculous because it's not possible, it's ridiculous because Dean had no daily hands on academics when Rashad was enrolled.

BTW not a single member of the 09' champ team was an AFAM member. But I do suppose when you can't beat us, when you steal and use another school's Our State campaign and fail to win a single in-state game, you've got to be able to grasp something.

I was responding to the comments in this thread. NC State alums need to focus their attention in-house. There are some real academic issues there that need to be addressed. This UNC academics "scandal" is a media sideshow. Meanwhile, NC State steadily falls each year in the academic rankings, and nobody shows any concern.

I am sure they appreciate your worry with their academic standings, but this thread is about the UNC situation.

Isn't DireWolf a NC State grad worrying about the academic standing of UNC? I don't see the difference.

I think the issue stems on how we pretty much mold athletes from childhood now, you have college recruiters looking at 5th graders now, in their ear all the way until their senior year of HS. Children in middle school getting professionally trained.Nike sending kids free gear, websites and youtube channels like hoopmixtape and ballislife giving kids national followings. The result, by the time these kids are old enough to go to college, Many of them across the nation believe without a shadow of a doubt that they are not only going to the league, but they are going to dominate once they get in, and that they will be there for 10 to 15 seasons despite the average being 3.

Then schools making a killing off of student athletes. Ticket Sales, Advertisements, TV, Apparel, Video Games, etc etc. Obviously you have to have a certain GPA to play and so we see nationwide athletes taking easy courses so they can play, and since as I mentioned above they pretty much think their going to the league and going to have millions they don't see the value in at the very least taking legitimate courses that could benefit them. 30 for 30 Broke was good at least illuminating the importance of at the very least having financial literacy.

"There is documented proof of fraudulent classes. Of forged grade changes. Of players (other than McCants) saying they did not have to physically be in AFAM classes. Of tutors giving excessive and impermissible help to athletes. And much, much more.

UNC loyalists have attacked the person rather than the message; they say McCants is an outcast and was always a trouble-maker. They do not, however, have any factual arguments to refute what he has said.

Again, history, data, and documentation supports McCants, and it also backs the other athletes who have spoken out: Michael McAdoo, Deunta Williams, and others, with more rumored to be speaking soon.

Overwhelming information points to the conclusion that the University of North Carolina used and abused the education system in order to gain an athletic advantage. In essence, UNC-CH used education as a shield in order to cheat, and that simply is not right. It is not right in terms of setting an example for kids, it is not right to the university's local tax payers, and it is not right when they promote themselves as a national (and even global) collegiate brand. Education is something that is passed on to every child in our country, and part of an educator's duty is to show integrity by example. Again, it is right vs. wrong."

Saying "UNC" did these things is very narrow minded. All major universities do these things, and to sit here and say "not my school" is quite profound, and wrong. College sports is a MULTI BILLION dollar business. When money is involved, the system get abused, cheated, etc. as long as agents have round the clock access to athletes, and as long as your college stands to make a few million dollars or more in revenue from having good athletes, this corruption will stick around. Some college athletes may choose to get an education. But a lot of them will choose the easy route, and most every college will help them with that path. You're kidding yourself if you think "not my school".

People should really understand the history of these issues at UNC:

In 2010, the NCAA decided to crack down on players receiving illegal benefits. Several prominent football programs were investigated. UNC actually had a number of NFL prospects that year, and one of them tweeted pictures from an agent-sponsored party in Miami. That caused the NCAA to investigate UNC as well, but they really only had questions about two UNC players known to be at that party.

The other schools under investigation handled things in the typical way. They rejected the NCAA's request to participate in the investigation, and said that the school would conduct their own investigation. Within a week, they told the NCAA that the claims of wrongdoing had been fully investigated, and that the school would issue the appropriate punishment.

UNC, on the other hand, pursued an idiotic strategy of giving the NCAA investigators absolutely anything they wanted. UNC allowed the NCAA to interview all players on the team, even if they were not accused of anything. They allowed the NCAA to sift through all player and coach emails, as well as all phone call records from the football facility. UNC even instructed players to hand their personal cell phones to NCAA investigators so they could view their contacts, call records, and text messages. It was a total fishing expedition.

Not surprisingly, what started as a couple of players facing suspensions quickly escalated. New violations were found, and the NCAA only discovered academic issues after combing through player emails. On top of that, media outlets in Raleigh were able to get a general idea of what the NCAA had discovered, and issued their own FOIA requests for the same information, which began the 4-year local media assault on UNC.

In the end, the main takeaway is that UNC's administration handled things in a colossally stupid way, and it all could have been prevented; however, anybody suggesting that other major universities could have weathered the same sort of investigation without discovering any violations is really full of it. Ironically, UNC is actually better than most when it comes to these compliance issues.
