I just wanted to give a shout out to Guglhupf (http://www.guglhupf.com/), the european bakery in Durham...They sell homemade Christmas stollen bread! Not only that, it's terrific. We're enjoying our first loaf now and have another on order for pick up on Christmas Eve.

Stollen bread isn't ubiquitous and mass produced stollen in a cellophane wrapped box just isn't the same. If you are longing for your annual loaf, give Guglhupf a try.

Now for the true test...how is their sourdough? I have ordered a loaf, also for pick up on Christmas Eve, to go with our cioppino. Another thread explores the dramatic difference between "sourdough" and "San Francisco Sourdough." We'll wait and see...

I was just thinking about buying some of the prepackaged stuff the other day, but this sounds much better. Thanks for posting!

Nice! I haven't tried their seasonal stuff yet, and will. We love their cheesy bretzels. mmmmm. Get there early in the morning b/c by later in the day, it's mostly gone.

I happened upon some stollen at Whole Foods this very afternoon. I can't recall the brand/maker, but it was wrapped in what looked like a waxed-paper loaf bag.
