I know this gets asked often, but I'm currently looking to move into my own place here in the triangle after 6 years in Greensboro. I have lived in an apartment for the past few years and am tired of having to monitor my movement since I get off late at night and tend to be active around then. At the same time, I really hate hearing people walk around on top of me, so I'm looking for a townhome in a good and safe area for around $1,200. I want a place I'd be safe coming home at 11pm and walking back and forth between my home and my car.

Any good, specific suggestions? I work at Duke University if that helps matters.

Downtown Durham has changed a lot. I just moved back to the area but live 6 miles from downtown. I'm confident folks here will have great suggestions!

Here's some suggestions based on where I've had friends buy/live in townhouses (I'm a grad student at Duke):

Thompson's Ridge - <10 minutes from Duke - a quick zillow search found this

Wyntercrest - ~15 minutes from Duke, on NC 55 - listings on Zillow

some of the townhomes in Hope Valley Farms - ~15 minutes from Duke, on MLK at S. Roxboro - listings on Zillow

All of the above are likely going to be renting directly from the owner rather than through a complex/management company. If you're willing to look at townhomes in apartment complexes, look at Century Trinity Estates on Garrett Road. I lived there several years ago and had a good experience, but I know management has changed twice since then.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm really paranoid about safety so my biggest concern is the vibe of the neighborhood. Are these all in a relatively low-crime area?
