Any of y'all from this area of Northwest Raleigh? I grew up around here, but I can definitely tell it was a remote area before the RTP boom. Any memories of those from this area? What did you like about it, and what did you dislike?

I remember one day driving up 54 going to a Carolina football game and seeing a big sign that read "Future Research Triangle Park" I remember Glenwood Ave. and pre-Crabtree days. Everybody used Highway 70 going to Durham before 40. There wasn't much on 70 either...Umstead Park, Angus Barn, Raleigh-Durham. Leesville Rd. used to start at Glenwood where Leadmine does now. There was an old farm and house close to where Town and Country now turns off. A country store at what is now Millbrook and Creedmore, and maybe a few dozen old houses before you reached the old Leesville community. I remember an old school house and country store there when I was doing some surveying there in the early 1970's.

Up until a few years ago, there was what appeared to be a former gas station at the corner of Strickland and Leesville (before the new 4-lane section was built between Strickland and Westgate.) There were also a couple of tobacco barns.

If you're into maps, the City of Raleigh's website has many aerial photos going back to at least the 80s. It's pretty interesting to see how roads were re-routed and how things have changed.

I live not far from the area and I don't mind it. What do you remember of the airplane noise by the way? While I almost never hear planes there are random times when I hear them.

OP, if you are on Facebook, you should join one of the "You know you grew up in Raleigh..." groups there. Lots of discussions of this sort all the time. A lot more people with Raleigh roots read Facebook than this forum.

There is a 3 million dollar Ponderosa style ranch house, right after 540 on Leesville RD. The guy who owned all the land, zoned it as residential right before the NCDOT came in and bought it up to use for 540. The landowner ended up getting more money for the land. I forget the name of the guy who owns it? They used to have a cattle ranch there. Not sure if they still do?

Those guys were State students. They first sold their furniture at the Flea Market in the 70's. The business spread like wildfire!

Randall Ward, he started "This End Up" furniture company. I'm sure others know a lot more about him.
