I will be graduating from college in May, and moving down to the triangle right after graduation. I accepted a job offer in the area, and will be working in Cary (off Weston Parkway). I have been looking for rentals for a short while, and visited the area last month.
A little bit about me: 21 years old, male, from Virginia. I would prefer to live somewhere near people my age. I do like some nightlife, but also like peace and quiet from time to time. I would prefer not to spend above $1,200/month on rent. I would also like to be able to walk to different restaurants/bars/shops.
When I visited the area last month, the areas that stood out to me were North Hills and Brier Creek. (I didn't visit downtown, but have looked up places like 712 Tucker and St. Marys Square Apartments, so I would like more info on those if anyone has any). North Hills looks like a good area, but seems like the commute could be bad at times. I would like a commute of less than 25-30 minutes. Also, as far as North Hills goes, does anyone have any apartment recommendations? I visited the Alexan and Park and Market, and neither of them stood out to me as being better than the other. Brier Creek looks like it has a good mix of restaurants/bars/stuff to do, and looks like a short commute to Weston Parkway. The only problem is it doesn't seem to be very walkable from what I can tell.
Also, I just recently discovered The Bristol at Park West (In Morrisville), and it seems like it has everything I want, but I found out that it is directly next to a railroad track. Does anyone live there and have any more info on this? Seems like it would be annoying at times.
Let me know if you think somewhere in the area would be a good fit for me.
Railroad tracks are not much of an issue since we are not mainline. There are a lot of nice places right of Weston and on into Cary proper. I'd be more concerned about the commute than the time to get to entertainment. You go to work all week, going out for fun mostly on weekends. Is a gym important? Find the closest one to work and start looking halfway between ;-)

Congratulations on the new job!
As for areas to research, do take a look at various districts in DT Raleigh and the Cameron Village area in Raleigh. From either you should be able to keep your commute reasonable to Cary/Weston. It's a straight shot out Wade Ave to I-40 and then the first exit to N. Harrison. Both will challenge your budget on the top end but you'll be in a much more interesting and walkable environment for after work activities and with people your age. DT Raleigh is really exploding at the moment with new apartments coming on line each quarter of the year. You'll have lots of options. If you don't want to spend the money for the new luxury apts, you would be hitting the market at the perfect time as budget-type apts rented by grad students come available when the Spring semester ends.
Congratulations on your new job! I'm excited for you. I'd look NEAR NC State, Cameron Village. You're still "college enough" that being NEAR students might feel like home.
If you just want a few restaurants and bars, and you want some quiet, it's not worth it to move to N. Hills and commute all the way over to Weston Parkway (MetLife? SAS? Verizon? )
I'd just go with The Bristol on as short a lease as they'll give you. They're brand-new units. You'll be able to walk to plenty of stuff to do (food, movies, shopping, etc), and you'll be about 15-20 minutes from downtown Raleigh if you want more lively nightlife. It's a very easy drive to DT from The Bristol... straight down Weston to Harrison, over to 40, and down Wade until you hit DT.
Once you're familiar with the area, you'll know exactly where you want to live.

Next time I go visit, I'll have to check out The Bristol at Park West, as well as some of the apartments in Cameron Village. Hopefully the train noise at the Bristol isn't too bad.

The train noise in most of Cary/Morrisville isn't too bad.
