Although I'm not an expert, I have also heard about the role of a virus and distress from large scale coordinated pollination events as a cause. Would seem like a PR move on Bayer's part though..

Bayer Crop Science sells seeds to farmers who grow plants that need bees to pollinate them. Without bees doing the pollinating, farmers would buy fewer seeds from Bayer.

Thats a strong statement for which there is no conclusive proof. Its thought to be one of many possibilities. In any event, it doesn't answer the OP's question.

Slightly OT, but something I only learned a couple years ago - don't use Sevin dust on your plants. Bees can carry it back to the hive where it is deadly.

Bayer opened the Bee Care Center a few years ago. Last year they had nearly 3000 visitors: school kids, farmers, State Senators, US Congress members, ordinary folks, etc. it's quite educational.
