Although I'm not an expert, I have also heard about the role of a virus and distress from large scale coordinated pollination events as a cause. Would seem like a PR move on Bayer's part though..

Bayer Crop Science sells seeds to farmers who grow plants that need bees to pollinate them. Without bees doing the pollinating, farmers would buy fewer seeds from Bayer.

Thats a strong statement for which there is no conclusive proof. Its thought to be one of many possibilities. In any event, it doesn't answer the OP's question.

BCS is very active in bee research, and just opened a new Bee Care Center at their N.A. headquarters at RTP.

There is a petition on Change.org for Bayer to stop selling its nicotine based insecticides which have been linked to Colony Collapse Disorder.

Slightly OT, but something I only learned a couple years ago - don't use Sevin dust on your plants. Bees can carry it back to the hive where it is deadly.

Lots of misinformation posted so far. First, it's not pesticides sold to tobacco farmers, it's neonicotinoid insecticides. Second, probably the biggest risk to bees from insecticides is misapplication by homeowners who fail to read and follow label directions. Neonicotinoids are toxic to bees but the hazard is low as long as used properly. And that's the issue...improper use. Sevin is also toxic to bees but low hazard when used properly. Common sense should tell you that if bees are present during flowering, don't apply an insecticide. By the way, everything is toxic at some dose level. Water is an example...too much and we drown!

Bee health is a complex issue and many factors, including insecticides, are involved. Varroa mite, poor nutrition (plant a bee friendly garden), viruses (Nosema and others), European Foul Brood. You can read all about it in this report http://www.usda.gov/documents/ReportHoneyBeeHealth.pdf

Bayer opened the Bee Care Center a few years ago. Last year they had nearly 3000 visitors: school kids, farmers, State Senators, US Congress members, ordinary folks, etc. it's quite educational.
