Why??!! Where there not enough options for grocery shopping? Are the three other super Walmarts within a 5 mile radius of this intersection not sufficient?! I knew that much undeveloped land couldn't last forever but this is just...I have no words.
Walmart does not have any Marketplace stores. It has Neighborhood Market stores. Kroger has Marketplace stores.
It appears Food Lion and Walmart (Supercenter and Neighborhood Market) are the major supermarket options. It would not hurt to have additional options like Harris Teeter and Publix.

Ok guys I did a thread about this several months back and strongly disagree. That whole area is still considered somewhat a food desert(i know some grocers have been added) but the demographics definitely will support a Wal-Mart Market. If you haven't had the misfortune of shopping at the New Bern/New Hope Wal-Mart you might not understand why many people will.choose doing their grocery shopping at the new market instead. It's also convenient for commuters heading down towards Garner and towards Knightdale. I will find the link to the prior thread and post it.
As far as Publix and Harris Teeter being better options, That tells me you don't live around there or you just recently moved. Harris Tester tried back in the 90's. Failed miserably. That section of Raleigh isn't getting HT or Publix just like my area of Garner isn't getting Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. Get it?
I live in that area. There was a huge push to get neighbors out in force to protest zoning when Sheets wanted to build on the NE corner. That effort was successful. Then there were more efforts to get people to be involved about zoning for the SE corner.
Many meetings were held at the NE CAC about this. Residents concerns were addressed. When the developers presented their plans they did incorporate many of the concerns. The majority of the residents attending seemed pleased and voted their approval. And so it proceeded to city channels.
I would have preferred housing or non-retail office space so voted against it. But the plans looked quite good for what it is. The shopping center will have curtailed hours of operation - including deliveries. There is a pad of the size that would accommodate a fast food restaurant. But the curtailed hours should keep the major players disinterested.
I'd prefer a Kroger in that location but it's not my call. HT or Publix (or several residents desire for a Trader Joe's) is unrealistic for the area demographics.
Now it seems signage is up and people are up in arms. Sure wish they had paid attention over a year ago. One of my neighbors is upset and protesting the whole thing on another forum. Can't tell you how often I tried to get her to attend meetings about it. Now she's conveniently forgotten that she was made aware of the issue.
If people aren't involved in their CAC, don't read the newspaper, don't notice public hearing notices then the best thing they can do is follow Raleigh Public Record for the Readers Digest version.
Thanks for the helpful links cat-link! I'm new to posting here. Unfortunately not usually able to attend those meetings bc of work & childcare. I also live in the area and I still think this is an unnecessary store. I get that the New Hope Church and New Bern Walmarts aren't in great shape, but the one behind triangle town Center is excellent. There are also two Food Lions close by, the one on Louisburg is usually pretty nice. For a slightly longer drive there's the Lowes Foods on Louisburg or the HT on Spring Forest. But whatever, it's too late now. Just hate to see retail moving into residential areas when there's already tons on Capital & Louisburg.
If you look at the city development page at the site's blueprints, the Neighborhood Market will be just the anchor of an entire strip mall and they will be tearing down the house next door. There is even out parcels for at least 1 restaurant.
