I say practice because I need everyone who might come into contact with my dog to be great! She's not your normal dog - she has some orthopedic issues that need to be understood, and some behavioral issues that can be even more challenging. Because of all of that, I have to be that much more careful about where I take her, even for such things as nail clippings. I'm really not an obsessive pet owner - my "normal" dog can pretty much go anywhere. But since having my "special" dog, I've learned that not all veterinary practitioners are created equal - and some really only like "easy" pets!
We're new to the area, and I'd really love to get established with a vet just in case. In Michigan, we had a local vet for regular stuff, and then her orthopedic specialist at the closest veterinary college. I'm looking to start local - as she's in dire need of a nail trim! Being that the techs usually do that - they need to be good, too. Any recommendations? I live within walking distance of Companion Animal Hospital of Wakefield - opinions on that place? Distance isn't really an issue - I'd rather find someone good than someone close.
We drive 30 some miles to take our special needs gal to see Dr. Sonja at Durant Road Animal Hospital. Should be a bit closer for you. Everyone there is super!

I found VCA to be very pricy. Even with the coupon on their site for $35 (I think that was the amt.) off for new clients it cost me over $100 just to deworm my puppy. They were all very nice, don't get me wrong, but I couldn't imagine how much it would cost me for a real medical procedure. Now I go to Magnolia Animal Hospital, and they are fantastic. Doctor Allison is very very nice, the waiting area is huge (although you hardly ever have to wait), and they have these cool poop flags outside that you stick in the ground if your dog goes on the lawn (I thought that was the coolest idea, haha). The prices are very reasonable too, and people I had never even seen before were coming up to my dog and addressing her by name after an overnight visit for heartworm treatment. All in all, I was very impressed.
You may want to try Dr. Darch at North Wake Animal Hospital in Wake Forest. Always found his pricing to be good and he always clipped my dog's nails, not the tech. He's near Wal Mart in Wake Forest.

I know someone with several dogs who goes to North Wake Animal Hospital, and has gone there for years, and is very happy with them.
We go to Companion Animal Hospital of Wakefield - we see Dr. Metz - and couldn't wish for better care. He's great and we have the utmost confidence in him. We had some involved treatment there, with good results. Everyone there is very caring, and they all take a personal interest. He's got a great staff. 919-488-5300.
Dr. Neuenschwander with Brentwood Animal Hospital. He is on Atlantic Avenue. Been with him for over 13 years and both he AND his staff are caring, supportive, understanding and compassionate. I will NEVER go anywhere else!
All my posts thus far have been about Bowman, but I swear I don't work for them! Anyways I know they do Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation, which is a fancy term for pet chiropractics. They also have a massage therapist. The VOM stuff is done with the latest tools that measure exactly how much force is needed to adjust animals with no more or less. They're in N. Raleigh.
I have to tell you how much Dr. Steve Neuenschwander with Brentwood Animal Hospital has meant to us. He is the type of 'family doctor' for animals that you and I would like to treat us. He took a personal interest in our dog and our family. He was more than a vet over the last 2 yrs when our dog was treated for diabetes and arthiritis. HE CALLED US over the weekend to find out how our dog was doing on his insulin and medication. He helped us care for our dog until the very end, and then came back into the office on a Sunday afternoon (after he had just arrived at home) when our dog suffered a stroke like event and had to be euthanized. Everything about our experience with Dr. N and Brentwood Animal Hospital was excellent. When we went out of town we boarded our dog with them because of the excellent care we knew he would receive. I know there are good vets in this area, but in our opinion they don't come any better than Steve Neuenschwander and his staff at Brentwood Animal Hospital!
