These highlights come courtesy of pierretong1991, who did this for Raleigh and Wake County in an Excel spreadsheet linked here with the 2018-2027 projects listed (in the All Projects tab): https://connect.ncdot.gov/projects/p...208-23-16.xlsm
1) Widen I-40 from I-85 interchange to east of NC 86 interchange to six lanes - 8 miles
2) Widen I-40 from NC 86 interchange to 15-501 interchange to six lanes - 4 miles
3) Widen I-40 from 15-501 to Durham Freeway interchange to eight lanes - 9 miles
4) Upgrade 15-501 from I-40 interchange to 15-501 Business split to expressway (Mt. Moriah Road and Southwest Durham intersections on 15-501 will become interchanges) - 2 miles
5) Upgrade US 70 to six-lane freeway from Lynn Road to Page Road - 3.5 miles
6) Widen Durham Freeway to eight lanes from I-40 split to East End Connector being built now - 4 miles
7) Widen NC 751 to four lanes from NC 54 to Southpoint Auto Park Blvd. - 1 mile
8) Widen NC 54 on Chapel Hill side to six lanes to I-40 interchange, and four lanes to NC 55- 11 miles total
There are about 55 projects total listed involving one or both of the counties that can be found on the spreadsheet.
I said it on these forums before but the NC54 widening really can't come fast enough! Especially the stretch between 55 and Fayetteville, which is a hassle during Rush hour traffic.
Now that 751 South is a thing, Either Fayetteville Rd, or NC751 would have to be upgraded to four lanes to accommodate the new traffic. 751 already has planned upgrades from 54 to the Future Sheetz/Johnson Lexus. They should consider extending those upgrades to just south of the intersection with Fayetteville Rd.
The intersection of 15-501 and Garrett Rd also needs to become an interchange if they're planning to convert it to a limited access highway.

Yes, I was going to make the same comment. 54 is awful in that stretch during rush hour and is going to get way worse when the neighborhoods at 54 & Barbee are completed.
Have these actually been approved yet though? I didn't realize this was final.
This is what I'm wondering. That all sounds too good to be true. Widen I-40 between 15-501 and 147, widen Durham Freeway and NC54, holy cow. All this would be great...2018-2027, Jesus...weird to think that 2027 is only 9 years away, that's a wtf in itself lol
Is the list in any particular order? I know there are a couple on there I'd like to see started in 2018 rather than 2027, but I'm sure most everyone feels that way.
The new list of projects are "draft" at this point, pending final approval by the Board of Transportation. But, they're likely to be rubber stamped. I believe part of the work still to be done is to balance the projects by year to match the funding.
Regarding other projects mentioned, the 15-501/Garrett interchange was included in the last round of projects. And the City has a project to widen 751 from Woodcroft to Roxboro, with the road being realigned with Roxboro, which is already four lanes.
It's a trend I've been noticing in more and more cities around the US - that the improvements made to roads actually don't actually last as long as they're supposed to.
