Very sad to hear this. I try to only watch local news and always favored ABC11...even as a kid. Growing up Larry Stogner was always my favorite. Very genuine and upstanding guy. He'll be missed.
Larry Stogner (Charlie Gaddy, too) represented the era when TV news was "THE news" for the majority of folks. People today under 40 might not identify with the nightly rhythm of watching local and national (ABC, CBS, or NBC) TV news. Most households did. The anchors of these newscasts were viewed as having high integrity, credibility, and journalistic professionalism. I'm not saying that today's anchors don't have those attributes, but the Internet and the availability of multiple TV channels on cable has eroded the authority and the presence that anchors in previous generations had.
He was also from an era when the Triangle was much smaller, with a higher proportion of NC natives. I don't miss the "down home" style of broadcasting we used to get, but aside from a few YouTube videos that style is long gone now.
ALS is so debilitating. An unfortunate fate for such a good person.
