By the way, I saw today that Crabtree Valley Mall is getting a beer garden.......I'm curious how such a place would survive in a mall - doesn't seem to have the same draw that a neighborhood brewery has.

I know I probably won't be going there. It's too much of a hassle getting in and out of that mall.

I will say, I see a good number of breweries that make session IPAs as well as sours that are under 5.2%. Some stouts and porters are under that as well. I just had a Berliner Weiss from Durty Bull out of Durham yesterday that was at 3%. It was really good too. It can be a challenge finding beers at that ABV level but I think there are more options now than ever before.

Bombshell Brewery does a good job with the lower alcohol beers.

The beer scene has gotten a little out of control if you ask me. I refuse to drink beer out of anything that resembles a wine glass. I don't care how foofy the beer is, beer should be consumed out of a pint glass, a mug, a can, or a bottle.

Ha! Another example of how the DT Cary planning folks have no idea what they are doing.

They truly have no vision. Desperate and clueless, willing to give anyone with a bank loan an opportunity to cut them a check. How about the town actually rolls out a plan to turn downtown into a vibrant, energetic destination for locals and visitors? The town doesn't need another watering hole to throw down some IPA of the month. How about some QUALITY restaurants? Some mom and pop shops with interesting content? Some outdoor dining areas that will make people WANT to come downtown.

No vision in the town of Cary. That's why downtown has been the same for years. That's why businesses open w excitement then shut their doors 24 months later because people simply don't want to come downtown, there is no draw. Oh wait, that's right, the super cool movie theatre....or multi million dollar park...or wait, the library, that's right! What a joke. ToC leadership all needs to be fired or voted out if this town is ever going to capitalize on the amazing opportunity that has fallen onto its lap.

They tried to get Gonza but the Gonza folks said no -went with Waverly for their Cary expansion. That would have been an established, experienced, respected regional restaurant group giving their nod to DT Cary instead of first timers looking for a place to land. It bummed me out as I think they could have really got some momentum going DT. They did their homework and weren't wowed with Cary's median income; they dug deeper and didn't like what they saw in the demographics surrounding DT -despite whatever promises and packages Cary was offering them to open DT.

Saying this, La Farm putting their faith in DT was huge -if they actually open a cafe and not just keep it a bread factory. Also, the folks who opened the Mayton Inn are experienced with a proven track record and I am assuming they did their market research and did not just open because it was Cary. A failure there could damage their brand. Maybe that is what Gonza was thinking?

So you are advocating that government should get in the practice of selecting winners and losers, deciding who can open a legal business, and who can't? Sounds kind of like Socialism to me (surprising, based on other posts you've made). Personally, I prefer the Captialist model. If a company has an idea, and enough to invest, let them. If they succeed, great! American dream accomplished. If they fail, then that is on them, and they can try again if they have funding, or they can work for someone else.

For what it's worth, I think DT Cary is coming along nice. Still a long way to go, but huge progress from five years ago. IMO, they need (and this would be where government can invest) a place in town to host outdoor concerts and events. To attract people downtown on a regular basis (beyond a few festivals and fairs), so that the area becomes a destination. This would help the businesses that choose to invest in the area, without directly telling companies who can go into business, and who can't...

Yeah that's a real lack of understanding of what zoning can actually do and what the role of local government is in recruiting business to an area. They have been pushing years to get something going with the church and private developer for the mixed use development but can only encourage private companies so much so it never happened until recently. (Assuming it does keep going) They have gotten the park and the library and parking deck going with a mix of local and county funds as well as The Cary theater and that will help.

And these businesses choosing to invest in downtown Cary have little to do with the stuff from past years IMO and I feel they are building a nice critical mass of things that do bring people downtown unlike craft shops and the like which proliferated previously. And if you haven't been down there recently, you need to as places are drawing people regularly.

As far as Gonza, I love their food, but if you want to talk about a place where over a good period of time, things go to die, Waverly is just that. Hopefully they do turn that around for good this time, but I still feel like it's a pretty big mistake to pass up downtown Cary right now. Then again, I forget, having only been to the Hillsborough St Gonza, that they started in suburban strip centers, even though their branding and overall aesthetic seems much more suited to a more urban location.

You are right, at the same time at least it is not another auto/tire shop. The thing is there is potential, looking at chatham square, if some of those restaurants were located downtown, they could have made like a (micro)international food district. You have carpet stores, that kitchen store that nobody goes to, and other related businesses that just shouldn't be downtown. La farm Bakery and the new pizza joint and eventually the new mix use project are steps in the right direction. Will say the one time I did go to the theater I actually did like it. I wonder how the mayton inn is doing. Feel like they should have waited, if not for more restaurants to open downtown, at least for construction to finish.
