I know there's a drought and all, but what is the state's excuse for this nonsense? They propose that you keep track of the water you use (how in the hell do they think you're telling them truthfully how much you're using anyway?) and if you don't the state will fine you? What are they getting at - if it gets worse are they then going to pump your well dry to ration off to everyone else? Are they gonna pay you for it? I'm glad I'm not using well water in NC anymore (or any of the state's water supply, if it makes anyone feel better) but it was as clean as anything Pepsi bottles in NC and sells back to you for $1.49 after sales tax...

I could go a month or two without seeing rain if it means some falls on NC...y'all want it as bad as I want it to go away.

considering the constant barrage of reports that come through showing some amount of the population not intending to "follow the rules" (like some of the more obnoxious HOA's) - I'm not surprised. Yes - it took them too long to get here, but something has to be done.

All of the wells are tapping the same aquifer, so people playing games do it at the expense of everyone around. It's time to get serious about this.

If anything it'll scare everyone into saving their resources.

I'm not saying people with wells shouldn't be conserving their resources, not at all. I live where it rains all the time and I don't waste water. For one thing, I still have to pay for it. But this whole proposal just seems like a dangerous encroachment of the state on private property. The state is asking for use data for which you can provide estimates at best (are you gonna hang a dry-erase board over the toilet and tally a point every time you flush the toilet?) and if what you produce isn't what they want they might be able to penalize you. What is the money for the fines going toward? Bottled water for Mike Easley? You can't buy rain.

As for the HOAs, they can go ahead and put a hold on their demands that everyone's lawn is as green as the HOA chair would ideally like it. That's just not the way it's gonna be right now. But if this had gone into effect two years ago, I suspect I'd be one of the people expected to tell the state how much water I used washing the dishes in the sink (for lack of a dishwasher that would more consistent in its water consumption per use).

Of course this has not gone into effect and is only a proposal at this point, but I guess we'll see what comes of it...

Brings a whole new mental picture to the term "dry wipe".

I guess those jerks still watering their yards with 'I'm using well water' have brought this upon themselves. Sorry, wasting well water is no different than wasting city water. There's only so much in the ecosystem.

If you are watering your lawn with well water, doesn't it go back in the ground? I understand there is evaporation and transpiration but is this really something our elected officials really need to monitor. JMO.

Sounds like communism to me. I guess we will have to report to the govenment when we leave the house next, how long we were out and why. I thought North Carolina was still part of the USA?

Maybe I should buy stock in a company that builds meters to monitor how much well water is being used...since virtually no one has such a device on their well.
Most people I know with wells are more conservative with the water anyway because they do not want it to go dry.

DINGDINGDING!!!! Exactly. Most people I've ever know who have private wells (myself included when I lived in NC) do the best they can to conserve water because they don't want it to go dry and they know that if it does, it's going to be expensive as all get out to dig another one, if they even can. Not to mention the whole lack of water for daily living deal.

I'm honestly not surprised this has been brought up for consideration. My faith in the NC gov't and the special study groups died years ago. :\
