Interesting. After viewing the ACT score list, why would a school do appreciably better on one list and not the other? Thanks for posting and all your work involved michgc!

That is interesting JaPaKoMom. I wonder if there's more teaching to the test or something, but I'm not sure which test.

Yes. So is Research Triangle Charter and perhaps some other schools on this list. I suspect those results come from a subset of their 8th graders taking the EOC for Math I.

Yes, I think you must be right. I just looked up some other middle schools. Ligon Middle, Carnage Middle, Endeavor, West Millbrook Middle, Leesville Rd. Middle all have math 1 scores >/= 95%.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm not very familiar with the charter schools and was just taking a guess at what was a high school. So I guess we can ignore that from the list.

There are so many charters, I thought maybe there was another exploris that I hadn't heard of. Thanks for making the list!

I was wondering the same thing. I don't know the answer, but here are some things I was thinking about regarding it. The ACT is more important to get into colleges. No college cares about how well a student does on its state's standardized test. So perhaps there is some emphasis on the ACT in certain schools or perhaps in some schools the reverse happens and they emphasize the state test more.

Also, the tests measure different things. The NC EOC tests are mostly measuring content that the students should have learned in the past year for a particuar course, Math 1, Biology, etc. The ACT measurement is likely much broader and tests knowledge acquired from earlier years in school as well. In the past I have also noticed that scores between different tests don't always correlate. For example, Chapel Hill Schools usually top the list on SAT scores across the state, but they don't usually top the list on the NC EOC tests.

The other thing is, this is the first time I have put together a list of ACT scores, and after discussing it with Poppydog on the other thread, it is only showing the percentage of students who got a composite score of 17 or above, which is only the minimum score to be considered admission to a UNC school. Looking at the list, ones takeaway might be that many schools did pretty well, but it seems like that is a fairly low bar, and I'm not sure if it's really equivalent to getting a 3, 4, or 5 on the NC EOC, which is what the first number on this list shows.

If I compile a list that shows the percentage of students who are considered "college ready" on the ACT which equates to getting a score that varies between 18 and 23 on each subject test, it will likely show a much different story. If I have some free time today, I might do it and add it to that thread. The second number in this thread about the EOC test shows the percentage of students who scored a 4 or 5 on the test, which is also supposed to mean "college ready." So it will be interesting to see if there is a correlation between those. Although, what NC is calling "college ready" might not be the same as what the ACT calls "college ready."
