Thanks. Raleigh Rescue has a place near Capital and Millbrook. Not far from where I work.

I've handled old computers for friends quite often. If they actually work, but have little street value, then I've found the best solution is to ask friends, and gift it to their teenagers.

Smartphones and tablets are nice, but students need something with a keyboard and full screen to do school work. As long as it can run Word/Excel (or the Open Source equivalents), then it's useful to them as a 1st PC.

This is the best option. These folks do great work.

I had never heard of this place before. Thanks for the information. I now have a place to drop off my older laptop and tablet.

But even they won't take Zitskty's big ole CRT monitor!

Craigslist is your friend. Re-Posted there in the free section, and already have some interest in what I'm giving away.

Let us know how it goes and how many people blow you off.

The only problem I ever had with Craigslist was one time when someone made me wait an extra 20 minutes because they were going from Cary to Raleigh and got lost. I have given away or sold several things through Craigslist and usually it's a good experience.

I like to "curb alert" stuff like that on CL. If the free stuff is still there the next day I take it for recycling at the Wake County center on Duponte Dr. in North Raleigh.

I've donated a couple of computers to Goodwill before. I remove the hard drive first though. They can install a cheap hard drive and load free Linux on it or whatever. Or they can scrap it. We donate a lot of stuff every year to various Goodwill's so I don't think I'm taking advantage of them at all.

I did that with some patio furniture I no longer wanted.
