Do any of you know the type of cherry tree that is blooming now (early January)? It has small deep pink or hot pink blooms on dark brown branches.

Thanks so much!

I don't know the name, but I think this is much to early and they are going to get hurt the end of this week with all the cold coming.

Hey, I see you are in Carpenter Village. That's a really nice neighborhood.

It could be the Kanzan Cherry as there are a few different types that grow locally.

I saw some too this weekend. They're definitely was too early and the cold that's coming will probably not be a good thing for the blooms.

I believe what you are seeing are actually plum blossom trees (prunus mume). They do look a bit like young cherry trees. Their flowers can be whitish pink to deep red depending on the cultivar. It is normal for them to bloom as early as January but this does seem a bit early, probably brought on by the warm December we just had. I saw one on New Year's Eve beginning to open in North Raleigh.

We have an Autumn Flowering Cherry that is known to bloom in spring, fall and in mild winters (ours has flowered every winter since we planted it). However the blooms are usually light pink on the Autumn Flowering Cherry.

Another thread thinks it's the Okame Cherry. Google pictures of the tree and see what you think.

It might be a Flowering Apricot.

This fast-growing, deciduous tree often starts blooming on warm days in January or early February, although it will vary some by variety.

These bloom every year around this time. They tolerate cold quite well.
