Would someone share their experience on purchasing compost from Raleigh Yard waste recently? We want to pick up some bags/ cubic yard of compost, never been there before, called the office. The operator didn't know the answers. Per the website compost costs per bag is $3, and Cubic yard is $12.

Is the compost in bag already? if not, do you bag them yourself? Do they provide the bags? what type of bags are ideal for it? Could you buy cubic yard in bags? Will a cubic yard fit into a minivan?

We need about 3 to 5 cubic yard for backyard to complete the garden, but don't need them at once. Got a couple of quotes from landscaping company, It was very pricey.

Thanks

Bought from them several times, like black gold the dirt is so dark and lush. Bring your own large heavy duty trash bags and you fill yourself IIRC. Great value for the money. Just put a tarp in your car before loading. Bags will be heavy!

Oh and three cubic yards is a ton of dirt. Actually according to google three tons. You won't be moving that in a minivan without repeated trips. IIRC they will load a backhoe's worth of dirt for $25 but even that was 2.5 cubic yards and would way over gross your typical car tow'd trailer.

Compost is heavy, you're looking at 1,000-1,500 lbs per cubic yard. You aren't going to move that in a minivan. You'd be best to go and rent one of those pickup trucks from U-Haul for an hour or two. They aren't very expensive.

Don’t put it in your car. It smells awful, and if it leaks into your carpet or upholstery you’ll wished you hadn’t messed with the stuff. If you aren’t hauling in a truck or trailer I wouldn’t bother. Just have some delivered or buy it from Big Box in sealed bags...but still! Cover the carpet with a tarp just in case

If you have a hitch, usually a minivan can easily tow a Uhaul utility trailer.

Yes it will tow the trailer. But you will wreck your transmission on the ten mile drive home when it's actually loaded. Just as an example a Sienna has a tow capacity of 3,500 lbs, Uhaul doesn't even make a trailer capable of hauling the 5000+ lbs of the weight of three cubic yards of dirt but pretend they did. The trailer will weigh 1500 lbs+, giving you a 2000 lb max load. So now you've overgrossed by 3000 lbs, or basically three quarters of another minivan.

And that doesn't even touch on the max capacity of the trailer being around 2000 lbs as well.

You could fill with bags and make multiple runs but that would be a lot of work. Honestly 3-5 cubic yards is a lot of dirt, I would get it delivered.

The pre sealed stuff st the big box stores is basically partially decomposed bark. It's more expensive and way less quality than the compost available for $3. You also get a lot less.
