So, am curious. If a building is condemned, and there's a bright green CONDEMNED sign on it, and this is in Durham, it seems odd that the upper floor previously ruined by fire is just being rebuilt.

Doesn't it?

I mean, doesn't condemned mean condemned? I'm no building code expert.

It's an apartment building, so if something is wrong here and puts future tenants in danger, I want to say something somewhere.

I would think a condemned building could be brought up to standards by
renovation & inspections.

Most anything wrong with a house can be fixed.

There's a period of time when a building is condemned for the owner to make corrections. Could be a fair amount of time, weeks or months.

Huh, thanks, I guess that's it. It's probably fine, then. I expected the building to be removed after the huge fire and all

It's not irreversible. It just means the building can't be occupied. It can be repaired, so it doesn't necessarily mean it will be torn down.

A couple of houses in my neighborhood have had fires (please clean your dryer vents). Not sure if there was a condemned sign on the houses, but unlivable for a time period. Both houses were renovated without being torn down.
