How hard is it to find a rental house (3 bed, maybe 4) if you have dogs? (we have cats too but I figure if they take dogs, cats should be okay). We have a border collie and a hound mix, so not small dogs. My husband is considering a position at NC State and we'd want to rent for a while before buying. Is that going to be super difficult with dogs, or not a big deal? Different places I've lived have been different in this regard.

One Dog? How Many Cats?
I didn't find it hard at all, but many have limits on total animals allowed. I paid an extra $400 deposit (on top of the regular one month's rent deposit of $1450) last time around. I also only had one dog and no cats.
The dog isn't a big deal. The cat won't be a big deal. My concern would be with the combination and the plurality of cats you mention.
With the amount of people that have pets, I imagine you'd find plenty of rentals that allow non-aggressive dogs. Just be aware of the extra pet-related fees the apartment/landlord may require.
You should be able to find something. I would recommend looking with a realtor rather than going through CL. Too many scams on CL. When we were considering renting our home out, the realtors we spoke with told us that we really needed to make it pet friendly because that would increase our rentability (is that a word?). We have dogs and a cat, so making it pet friendly wasn't an issue.
If you have enough money saved up, I would suggest buying a house and living in it for a year or two while you look for something you like better.
I am guessing that rentals that allow pets are not in great shape and may not have suitable fencing. You take the risk that what you see as normal wear and tear will be seen as damage by the landlord, and there goes the security deposit. You might find a great rental, but the odds are against you so also look for a house. Houses in decent shape that go for less than 300K are usually easily resold as long as the neighborhood is not derelict.
on a high level numbers basis, from our MLS (which doesn't come near to inludng all rentals) within 10 miles of NC State (but eliminating areas where 10 miles = 30+ minutes commuting) ...
344 3 BR+, pets allowed in some fashion, privately-owned units are for rent or have been rented over the last 90 days
244 of them were single-family. But at this moment, none are available.
138 specifically excluded pets.
So, you've got a very good chance to find a place that accepts pets. You are bumping up against some limits, and many places will only allow dogs of a certain max size.
Average rent is $1,500/mo.
