Hello again,

I've only visited Raleigh during my spring breaks before or in May. And it was gorgeous weather then. I was bracing myself for a humidity shock this current visit, and the weather has felt so nice instead of what I was preparing for. It's hot but not unbearable. It's been better than NJ weather all summer. Is this unusual or this is about how hot it is normally?

Unusual. Tons of unsettled weather lately, and cooler than normal temperatures.

It's not typical to have thunderstorms every day like we have been.

The weather in regards to the rain is a bit unusual but other than that this is another great NC summer.

This has been a much rainier and cooler summer than is typical.

We usually get afternoon thunderstorms pretty regularly from late May-mid September.....but they are usually brief and only in the late afternoon/early evening. You can almost set your watch by them. Some years we have pretty bad drought (I think the most recent really bad one was 2007 when Jordan Lake and Falls Lake were reduced to puddles in many spots)

The anomaly this year has been how many "washout" days we've had...where it has rained morning, noon, and night. This has helped temper the several-day stretches of 95+ temps with high humidity we often get too. Humidity has still been pretty high because of all the rain....but many more days that have stayed in the mid 80s or lower than usual.

The regular rain showers have cooled it down. It's not unusual to get up to 95-100 degrees with a heat index of 105 or so.

Thanks! All I know is in NJ is been so humid from morning to into the night (worse at night) that I haven't wanted to go outside but the last 3 days have been great here.

In general, the summers are going to be hotter and longer in NC than in NJ. And the winters will be milder and shorter in NC than in NJ. There will be an exception once in awhile and where the reverse is true for a few days or a week.

It may be cooler, but the humidity and rain... UGH! And my poor thunderphobic dog has to take a tranquilizer almost every day.

This is by far the wettest summer since I have lived here (5 years). Although temps are cooler in general, I don’t really notice it because of the oppressive humidity. There have been several days when the high for the day has been higher in NYC than its been here. I just read something that stated that 2019 will be a colder and wetter winter here than usual.

I find it best not to expect “normal” anymore because it seems “new normals” are taking hold in so many different areas of life, weather included!

Today NWS Raleigh tweeted "The 30-day climate perspective plot... shows that most locations in North Carolina have experienced one of the top 5 wettest periods from Jul 15 2018 to Aug 15 2018. This is especially notable as many years have had a tropical cyclone during this period." Wake County during that period was #5 in recorded history.
