Hey guys, I just found a juvenile copperhead in my back yard. It looked just like this one:

I still have a lot to learn about the species here in NC, does anyone have any advice about co-existing with these critters?

We back up to a large forest area with several ponds and a stream nearby so this probably won't be the last time.

Moth balls.....snakes don't like them. Throw some along your property line between your house and wherever they're coming from.

fake owls are supposed to work as well. The baby copperheads are more venemous than the adults so be careful.

Thanks BayVillage, I'll give that a try.

I've been reading up and it sounds like I need to do the same thing for snakes as for the ticks and bugs, clear out all the tall grass, woopiles, mulch piles, etc.

Looks like my days of being happily barefoot are long behind me!
