I am looking at a new job and it has lead me back to NC. We actually used to live in Cary in 2000 and are so excited about leaving the Midwest and getting back there. We now have two children though so I am wondering how things have changed and if it's still a good fit. Our children are biracial, very into sports and I wanted to see if people thought it would be a good move for them or hard. We have only lived in the Midwest 3 years so they are excited to get back down south. It seems from what I read the schools are still top notch. Our kids are 15 and 7, any help/advice would be great thanks!

Being biracial is a non-issue, and being into sports is a very good thing and will help them acclimate.

As far as the schools being top notch, you need to read some of the other posts on this forum. There are some fabulous teachers in the system, but the system is very much broken.

Thanks for the heads up on the schools I will search these threads. When I looked them up on greatschools.org we thought they looked good but of course it's better to hear from those actually dealing with them

If you were looking on greatschools for Cary schools, you likely still found some very good ones. That is not likely to change, given the makeup of Cary's citizenry. Fear not.

The Triangle is more diverse than it was when you left, so the kids being biracial is not unusual at all. I wouldn't say it's not an issue just because it can always be an issue (see Bill De Blasio's recent comments) but I think it is less of an issue here than it is in many areas of the country.

The area has grown rampantly since 2000 (and I bet you thought it was growing fast then!) which causes the usual problems found when things grow too much, too fast--and Cary is at the epicenter of that--but in general, the "feel" of the area is pretty much like it was before, a little more diversity in race due to lots more people from other nations (notably India) coming to the area and many of them prefer Cary/Morrisville. Apex is becoming the "next Cary" since Cary is pretty much "full". Of course, just because you might work in Cary doesn't mean you'd have to live there.

Since you lived here before, you might try Google-earthing your old streets and especially larger boulevards you used to travel. Even though Earth is a few years behind, it will show some of the changes since you were here.

Thanks so much for all the help its a big move and with a older kids just a lot to think about. It's great to hear the area has become more diverse. Right now where we are that isn't the case and it has been hard on the kids. There will always be issues no matter where you live with race but I don't want to move them from one uncomfortable situation to another. And it will be wonderful not to deal with snow and below zero temps anymore.

We previously lived in the Cary Park subdivision and I can only imagine how it has grown with a school being there now and I saw a Harris Teeter. Probably wouldn't recognize the area with the growth

No, you wouldn't! My parents live up that way and I barely recognize it from visit to visit. You're in for a shock!

Kids being biracial won't be an issue (although I agree with poppy dog that anything is possible).

Schools are good - despite it all the teachers that are here are so dedicated.

Good luck with the move.
