I am from Upstate new york, i am 27 and i am a single mother of a three year old little girl. I am about to finish my Bachelor's degree in 2 weeks in Human Development/Child development. I have worked with the developmentally disabled for 5 years. i really want to move to North Carolina, and i am looking at the Raleigh area. I need a good paying job(obviously), good child care and a reasonable apartment. Does anyone have any ideas for me. Is Raleigh a good area or should i look else where. We are moving by ourselves. I need conv.

Well, my answer would be, you should look here AND elsewhere, for wherever you can find a job, FIRST. If you get multiple offers, then this is a very nice area, certainly, but someone in the job market in this economy who is going to move anyway should be (seems to me) looking NATIONWIDE for a job, not just hone in on one area as if that is the only option. That's the great thing about the Internet

But if a job brought you here, I believe you'd be happy here with your sitation.

I agree with Francis. What you should do is a nationwide job search. Wherever you move to, come with a job offer in hand. Otherwise, you're only making it tougher on yourself and your little daughter.

Yes, absolutely do NOT move here (or anywhere) unless you have a job first. This is not the land of milk and honey, as some would have you believe.

Absolutely, this point can't be stressed enough. I came to NC with no support system, but enough in savings to do until I got settled. Even then it was still hard. Finding childcare with someone that you trust will be the most important (at least in my opinion). Once you know your way around it should be easy, but it can be overwhelming navigating the inner and outer beltlines . As far as a reasonable apartment be prepared to pay $650 plus for a 2 bedroom apartment and that's in a less than desirable part of town.

Apartments are reasonable.

Child care can be costly.

Government jobs are almost 100% frozen.

If you don't have a job offer, don't come here at this point in the economic cycle.

Good luck to you and your daughter.

Raleigh is a great area to live , we just had some friends visit who loved it . Don't move here until you find a job - times are hard
