We're considering heading down to Charleston, SC for the weekend of the 4th, but I'm a bit concerned about traffic. The trip will involve about 200 miles on I-95. Any thoughts?
I know from experience that I-95 can be miserable for Thanksgiving travel, but I've never been on it over the 4th. We'll be heading down on Friday mid-day and back on Sunday mid-day.
I-95 always sucks, it's just a question of how bad. As long as there are no wrecks, it flows, mostly. But throw in one decent accident involving a tractor-trailer and it's a parking lot. You just have to take your chances. I usually find the return trip at the end of the weekend to be more congested than the outbound trip at the start of it. (Everyone seems to leave at different times to start their trip, but they all come back at the same time.)
Alternatively, you can take US501 from Chapel Hill to the SC border and pick up I-95 there, but I would only suggest that for someone on the west side of the Triangle.
I haven't traveled south on I-95 around the 4th, but last year I drove North and the traffic was horrible. The trip took 2 hours longer than it should have.
Yeah, the idea of spending an extra two hours in the car with my toddler sounds awful. I think we may postpone the trip and go another less busy weekend. Thanks so much for the responses.
Oh don't let the traffic scare you off your trip. Charleston is a much better place to spend the 4th than Raleigh. If you leave by mid-morning at each end of your trip, you should be OK - although there's always the risk of a bottleneck.

Don't worry, we'll definitely be making our trip to Charleston, it's just whether or not we want to go over a holiday weekend. We've got a toddler right now who's still a little too young to enjoy fireworks (going through a scared by loud noises phase), so we might have more fun on a more chill weekend.
